I Am Waiting For You Last Summer, the cinematic/ambient post-rock band, has returned with a cool new single and video for “Nulla.” On this key song from the band’s forthcoming LP called Without/Within, this artist leans heavily into their epic sound. The band shared, “‘Nulla’ was inspired by the idea that we — as living matter—are part of an evolving process that, at some point, begins to question itself. There’s something powerful in the image of consciousness emerging from the same material that forms stars and planets — and then turning inward to ask: What am I? What is this?” If you’re enjoying the new music video, please consider pre-saving their new LP here.

”Nulla” builds with a sense of cosmic scale and internal reflection. What was the first sound or idea that anchored the track’s creative direction?

As far as I remember, it all started with the rhythm. Beneath all the textures there’s actually a strong, pulsing groove! Everything else was layered later, and once the mood and overall feel of the track formed — that contrast between intimacy and expansiveness — the lyrics came together in the end through an automatic writing session. But at its core, everything really began with the rhythm.

There’s a powerful tension in “Nulla” between stillness and momentum. How did you approach balancing ambient space with driving intensity in the composition?

I think balancing things like this has always been part of our music. But this track, like the whole album, feels more cohesive and serious. I believe the fact that the overall idea and mood run through the entire piece helps hold that balance. And I’d like to thank Jack Shirley from Atomic Garden for his help with mixing and mastering — the recording gained a lot of depth, which complements this contrast perfectly.

The title “Nulla” evokes emptiness or nothingness—how does that concept shape the emotional or sonic arc of the piece?

”Nulla” is a poetic variation of the word “nothing.” The whole album is built around this constantly shifting focus: the self, the universe, and what lies beyond all of it — or, more precisely, outside of being. The lyrics are more about what surrounds us and how we arrived here, while the title points to what lies beyond — to nothingness. It creates a kind of closed loop.
