It’s really not that difficult. They go out of their way to make sure a character mentions exactly how long it’s been since x event from the last episode.

the only character I can’t name is the younger son of Rhaenyra. I get people being thrown off by a teenage Aemon and the other kids. But it’s really not that hard to follow. They make it very clear who is who and who are the parents of them.

 

yeah i believe the timejumps will stop and we'll get into the 2-3 year time period most of the rest of the show will take place by episode 8

 

How many lines of dialogue or scenes was Harwin in before this last episode? I feel like people could be thrown off by him suddenly being in so many scenes this episode but maybe I just feel like he wasn’t in a lot / not remembering him well?

Also hard for me to disconnect since I know the story / characters so curious how brand new viewers are taking all this

 

I have memory of him being the guard that Rhaenyra runs into when returning home after her little outting with Daemon. Then a few times last week.

 

I kind of like how this show introduces characters kind of in the background who later play a bigger part. I like how Larys just kind of snuck up out of nowhere. There are a few other characters that essentially just exist in the background right now that most viewers probably have barely noticed like Tyland Lannister and Maester Orwyle who will be much bigger deals later on.

i like how they're kind pulling a red herring with The Lannisters. Making viewers think Jason is going to be the most important Lannister character in this show, when in reality it's going end up being his dull brother most people have ignored so far < book/show spoilers

 

This is the one of the big criticisms I am hearing from podcasts is that the lack of emotional investment in characters because of how fast things are moving.

 

The Harwin stuff really got to me. The actor and the show did a good job with him. Was nice to see him really care about his children and hit me in the feels when he said goodbye.

 

I'm ok with it because 1) we didn't stay with Laena or Harwin that long in the book either and 2) there a tons and tons more supporting characters that are going to eventually be introduced in this show in later seasons that i'm looking forward to getting emotionally invested in.

One thing with Laena i do wish they showed was her friendship with Rhaenerya, as she was the only positive female adult relationship that Rhaenerya has in the book < book spoiler

 

This is a uniquely kind of stupid take where they can clearly see the entire point infront of them, but they somehow don't understand what they're seeing is the entire point.

 

I guess they want someone to “root” for? Idk I’m just in it for the intrigue and backstabbing haha.

So far the show has clearly set Rhaenyra up to be the sympathetic one. Way more so than what I was expecting as a Fire and Blood reader. Will be interesting to see how it’s handled going forward

 

I’m aware they’re all gonna do bad things.

But I’m team Allicent, Rhaenyra, and Daemon.

 

Lol imagine wanting GRRM to write black or white characters. Sorry my dude, they're pretty much all gray

 

I really want to see that Tyroshi general who dyes his beard purple and wears women's frock in combat in this show but i don't think we will Racallio Ryndoon. very cool character. i think we're only getting a mention of him in the show, he plays a larger part in the post-Dance parts of F&B though.< book spoiler

 

I'm enjoying it, but it is simultaneously moving too fast, while feeling a little too small (I'll try to explain that contradiction). Having not read the book, I was expecting the dragons to be used against external threats and used to keep them in control of the iron throne and have them basically be a horrible ruling family but hey, dragons, what are you going to do about it? I didn't expect it to be mainly internal squabbles, especially not 13 years worth of it over half a season. The pacing is also a little strange as BIG things happen, and then we jump 10 years with very little fall out over it, yet people are still carrying grudges over them? Like, nothing spilled over in the 10 years prior and this is the time to make moves? Then we see something like Larys is who is cunning and manipulative, but he's done nothing for a decade to shake things up? It's all a bit messy.

And I'm sure many will disagree, but the jacking it out the window scene just seemed like a 'lets get the internet talking' kind of moment. and there's been a few of those. Things that haven't felt like they have served the plot in any meaningful way besides 'hey this is game of thrones, here's your shock of the week'.

 

I will try to keep this as lightly spoilerish as possible but still gonna tag it in case someone doesn't want to see re: Aegon and the window scene As he grows up and become a young adult, he basically is described as kind of a "deviant", for lack of a better word. Like he definitely sleeps around a lot and is said to be more interested in sex and partying than he is in ruling or being King and being named heir. So I'm guessing they're just trying to introduce that side of him as a teen without doing another sex scene with a character meant to be 'underage'

 

And I'm happy to reassess moments when additional context is provided, just got that vibe in the moment.

i kind of saw this coming before the season started and kinda knew this would be an issue with some people This season is going to be like 80-90% prelude and set up. Once the meat of this story starts i don't think many will still complain about timejumps, pacing, and feeling too small. Just hold on a little bit longer.

 

Insane numbers this is putting up. Basically feels like it's gonna lead to some auto-greenlights to these series' that are in development. I am a-ok with that.

But as a not big fan of animation, I hope whatever story they choose to do the animated series for is one of my least favorites/don't care as much about hahah. I forget what that rumored show was going to be about. I think it might have been about Lomas Longstrider or the Sea Snake's 9 voyages, which will suck if it's animated (not that it would be bad, just that it would mean we'd be getting animated versions of things I REALLY want to see "for real" lol) because we'll get to see a lot of the known world through their eyes, and I want that to be done with live actors and sets so badly.

 

seems like Elizabeth Olsen is rumored for season 2 along with Cavill lol. we aren't gonna get either but it's insane ho wbig this is.
