2-3 songs I really like, the rest is meh. But that's pretty on par for me with this band. I'll take it.
I quite enjoy these guys and this album, but the full-tilt screaming and band slamming in with an epic crash, etc. would be more effective if they picked their spots rather than doing it all the time. "Christ Alive.." is insanely cathartic. And then they do like 3 more variations on it before the album ends.
They're my favorite modern band and I enjoy and have to re-visit and will love every song. But I totally agree, some Princess Peach-esque or Please Don't Cry, You Have Swag ballads/a tad variety or fully sung songs would be welcome. It's not really a complaint more as a wish. I love every song they've put out. It's a magnificent album still.
I don’t know, my favorite HM songs definitely strike that balance, but I’m totally fine with what they’re doing on this record and even though there’s a lot of screaming, I don’t think the songs sound the same at all and I find that as a whole the album hits pretty hard. It all sounds very tight and confident with an impressive array of influences. I’m definitely in the “this is a big level up” camp even if I’m not sure there are any songs that destroy me as much as please don’t cry or green squirrel. I never thought this band would incorporate elements that sort of remind me of touche amore, 3EB, and the 1975 Likely going to be the defining album of the summer for me
Two things can be true: 1) I love the album 2) (as of now) I don’t like it any better than You’ll Be Fine or I Won’t Reach Out to You
Cock Party 2 might be the best song they've ever written. The album's closer is one of their best songs to date. It's a perfect blend of everything they do well.
It still baffles me Drink Milk isn’t on here. Arguably the best song they’ve released in the past year. Would have been great to have Heem on here too. Probably in the minority, but I think Christ Alive is my least favorite on the album, followed by Family movie. Everything other than those two are pretty great. And I Smoke and Smacked My Head are probably the two favorites thus far.
Its crazy how often ill hear one of their songs for the first time and be like “eh it’s ok” and then it’s stuck in my head for the next month
I love how Hot Mulligans the type of band I think you could ask 40 people their favorite song and you might get 30 different answers.
It’s crazy how big these guys are getting, I remember reading about them in the emo thread in like 2016 when they were super small
This is where I am, and I do feel a bit disappointed because it sounds so much like everything else they've done. I was secretly hoping they would take some big risks on this one. But whatever, I've listened to it like 6 times and bought tickets to see them live so I guess it doesn't matter
My problem with Family Movie is most of the time listening to it I don’t realize it’s a separate song, I just think it’s the 2nd part of Leg Hole. There’s no break between the 2 and it took me many listens to realize it
I think that rules. When it kicks in, it’s just such an energy boost. Reminds me of If This Tour/DVP.
After sinking my teeth into this a little longer, this is their best, most mature, album. We’ve seen this plenty of times, but this is giving major “album before they blow up” vibes, as if this is going to be a bridge to a sonic departure (or another step up) that’s going to propel them to a level we haven’t seen from this scene in a while. The songs here are really, really fantastic. It feels so indebted to the lost pop punk bands of the 2010s, the polar bear clubs, the missers, the Somos’, etc while building on where they left off
Really paying attention to the lyrics of “No Shoes” today- yeesh. To be that raw about his relationship with alcohol is heavy and hard.
I didn’t really give this band serious listen until they were announced for the TWY tour. I had only listened to Pilot, BKYRD and Drink Milk & Run. Pilot definitely doesn’t compare to the bands other work. The older stuff is much more exciting than Pilot. You’ll be Fine is fantastic and one of my favorite pop punk albums of the last 5-10 years. This is the first band to really impress me since I heard Schmaltz and fell in love with SLS. This album is a great evolution from YBF. It’s the band not playing it safe and the chances they take really pay off. I actually really enjoy the vocals. Tades raspier/screaming approaches on the last two albums are much more enjoyable than Pilot which is kind of boring. I love the increased focus on the dual vocals and hope they continue to do it in the future as Chris sounds a lot of Tim Landers which I love. I can’t wait for them to announce a fall tour. They always bring out fun lineups and I’m excited to hear a lot of this album live.
I never knew they had so much music out before You’ll Be Fine. I also never knew they had such bizarre/unique song titles. I Win’t Reach Out to You certainly has some curious song titles but didn’t know it’s been that way from the start. Get major mid 2000’s vibes with the song titles / song title length. (I have no string opinions about if the titles are good or not just commenting on them but know full well that 8th grade me would have been absolutely heated at these titles because for some reason I really cared about that stuff way back then lol)
I almost compared this to Misser, but I was afraid it was just my bias towards that era of the scene showing, haha. They’re definitely the closest I’ve heard to this. Misser with some of the energy of Tiny Moving Parts.
