Misser is one of my favorite bands of the scene, Scmahhcked my Head reminds me especially of them, I’m Really Starting to Hope the World Ends in 2012 Their dual vocals were top tier
The joke song titles aren't really a big deal to me, but it does bother me a little bit more than it might otherwise just because the writing is so strong. It almost feels like a disservice in a way. Most bands doing these joke titles, at least to this degree, aren't typically in the same class in terms of lyric writing.
The writing is SO personal and heavy at times that having jokes as song titles is a nice juxtaposition for me so it doesn't all feel like the weight of humanity collapsing in on itself.
My only problem with joke titles is I have a much harder time remembering which song is which. Have the same problem on Gami Gang with a lot of the songs lol
Trying not to get irrationally angry and seeing red at the vocals being described as "derpy" in the news thread. Not liking shouted emo vocals ... sure, fine, whatever ... but the hyperbole of it being "unlistenable" is ridiculous for any fan of the genre.
Lmao I’m glad I tend to stay away from that part of the site The vocals on this are great and anyone that thinks his screaming is random or whatever really confuses me, haha
I stopped after that time everyone convinced themselves Tom Delonge was antivax based on literally nothing. Real chorus.fm brainworm moment.
Cannot get enough of this album. Hope this is the start of their upward trajectory. Could definitely see them being the next The Wonder Years. They definitely have the potential
I assume The Wonder Years are a bigger live draw, but Hot Mulligan have way more monthly listeners on Spotify - 875,000 to TWY 530,000. How do (or should) we work out popularity nowadays? Because on streams Hot Mulligan are already more popular than TWY have ever been. Yet it makes complete sense that TWY would be the headline and take HM as support. Also seems more likely that TWY could, for instance, tour internationally. I'm asking, I honestly have no idea how to gauge it.
I’d say a good 20-25 percent of the crowd left after HM on the TWY tour. They had a pretty huge crowd response for being direct support and there’s a lot of fanbase overlap with TWY. TWY definitely is more popular, but HM is definitely on the way up. They have helped sell out or sold out headlining most of the shows on their last three tours (Opening for TWY, KP and headlining with Prince Daddy opening). I see them headlining the biggest venues they’ve ever headlined in the fall. Band could very well be headlining the venues they played with TWY in the near future.
Yeah I agree I see people throw around the # of monthly listeners on streaming but I have no clue what that metric even means. Like what is it being compared to? Obviously against their peers but like in your scenario above that really doesn’t mean much
Number of monthly listeners is also skewed by being on popular playlists. It’s not a huge indicator of popularity compared to how live shows draw in my opinion. Regardless this band seems like the next big pop punk band to breakout. It’s been a while since the scene has had any younger bands have this much momentum. Probably since the days of State Champs/Neck Deep breaking out.
It is wild to me that people would watch Hot Mulligan then LEAVE for The Wonder Years. How can you love HM so much that you pay up to watch their opening set, and yet be so ambivalent toward TWY who are... very similar in the grand scheme of things? Maybe I'm just in my 30s and the younger HM crowd don't think TWY are cool. Do the kids think TWY are for millennials haha? Seems possible actually
Listened to this last week, didn't really hit with me, but will keep giving it a go as a lot of people on here are digging it.
They missed out. I was 18-25 through TGG and I'd say there is plenty to like!!! In fact I can pretty much guarantee if not for that trilogy I wouldn't be listening to Hot Mulligan now because I was fairly Pitchfork pilled until The Upsides convinced me that 12 year old Steeeve was right all along. Suddenly I was rotating through Upsides, High Violet and MBDTF and that felt like a perfect sweet spot for my (partly) evolved tastes. Incidentally I thought I'd see what was happening on this site (or possibly still AP.net can't recall in 2010 being that is somehow THIRTEEN years ago). And those 3 albums I liked so much were all top 5 album of the year here if memory serves. And I've never left the site again, even if I'm too busy to post a lot these days.
