If this band reissued all of their albums with new song names, I would not complain, I really don't vibe with their sense of humor. That aside, this is the most I've liked this band, Monica is a fantastic song as are a lot on this record. I've been pretty negative on them in the past, so I'm glad I didn't entirely check out on 'em!
Idk if this has been mentioned but the beginning of monster burger sounds extremely similar to the opener on you’ll be fine
I really like this album and am going to be sitting with this for a while, especially once I start digesting the lyrics (which are good!). However, Im already a little fatigued on their sound and am hoping for a bit more fresh of a direction for them next time around…YBF, WWIW, and this together feels like a complete trilogy
To me, the more I've listened, the more I feel like most of these songs just kind of blend together and nothing really lives up to And A Big Load I still enjoy the album, but nothing really hooks me in as much as their previous two records. I actually like every song on their most recent EP more than every song on the album Still, this band doesn't really miss haha. I still enjoy it
i definitely get the "it all kinda blends together" at certain moments on the album, but the lyrics are devastatingly good and there are some really high highs (big load, monica, carbon monoxide, slumdog).
Oh yeah lyrics have always been this band's strong suit, that's for sure! I'm the type of person who never hears or understands lyrics when listening to music unless I'm actually reading the lyrics at the same time, so I need to spend more time doing that
Yeah nothing really has clicked with me yet but that may be just other releases distracting me from giving this a fair shake
Fully recommend this as a complete record and a shining example of an 'album band' in this scene, right up there with TWY.
Yeah, all of their last three albums blend together a bit for me but they're all so good as a whole I don't really mind, and they definitely have enough stand out moments even if I don't remember which song they're on. I pretty much only listen to the albums in full anyway.
I have listened six times through now, including a 45-minute bike ride today which is typically my favorite, most relaxing listening experience. I’m with some others here that thus far this has been the least immediate a HM album has felt to me. There’s definitely some standouts but a lot of this hasn’t fully clicked with me yet. My vinyl arrived today so looking forward to Sitting down and listening while reading the lyrics.
I think I went through a similar mindset as some of you. When I first heard it I knew the lyrics were good but wasn’t sure how I felt about it but I actually think the songs have more variety on this album then WWIW. I think some of those layers and unique aspects of the record will come out more over time to people because that’s how it felt for me. I wrote over 2k words about the record and I still couldn’t quite capture how it made me feel. I hope the band continues to grow because they’re really something special.
Got to Monica Lewinsky (I’m not typing that stupid title) and I’m not feeling this. Nothing on here so far I’d take over anything on Why Would I Watch
Spun this a few times today. A lot of songs just sound completely the same instrumental wise from previous album. Especially the drumming in some of the songs.
I try not to get bent but I just think this band has a lot of new fans that really never listened to their discography. A lot of these songs incorporate a lot of pre-You'll Be Fine elements and I really love/needed some slow down jams from them. As much as I love WWIW it didn't feel as emotionally raw as the band before YBF. The complaints between "it's all the same, it's nothing like it" just kind of you enjoy the band or not. They've always themed themselves a similar sound on each project. But I can't see a person who enjoys their whole discography having issue with this. I get if you wanted that "punchiness" on every song but frankly, they've pretty much done that trick enough times. It's got a few "WWIW" jams and a few early HM sounding jams. Going to take me some time to digest, but it's Hot Mulligan doing it's thing so I'm not sure what anyone was expecting.
