I do agree. Giving an album only one listen isn’t enough for me to catch everything, whether it’s lyrics or making up my mind if parts in a song work for me or not. but that’s just my opinion, nobody lynch me
Listened through this several more times today and man it is clicking, even the interlude tracks are exciting to me, especially the second one (it’s so unsettling to me but in a good way). Really digging the overall flow and sequencing in addition to the songwriting and song structures. It’s wild to me how quickly songs like Fudge Axe, Mix Master, and Carbon Monoxide grew on me. This will be on repeat for the end of summer for me
I need to sit down with the lyrics because this still isn’t fully clicking. I feel like the melodies aren’t as good?
Oh man I think these melodies are more immediate than the last album. They’re a band where I might not click with a song the first time and then it becomes an earworm for the next year. I think Bon Jonah, Big Load (jesus christ), Mix Master and Cream are some of their most immediate tracks
Big load, mix master and carbon are easily the standouts for me. Everything else is kind of bleeding together. The last album clicked with me right away. Still enjoying this just waiting for it to fully click.
I almost mean it in a derogatory way, I do think some of their songs on this lack a huge pop hook that they usually have in favor of focusing more on the lyrics in a way that TWY do
It didn’t really grab me like at all on first listen I’m gonna keep with it but after really looking forward to this my first impression is kinda let down
I’m using them interchangeably too haha. I am in between this having some immediately catchy stuff and also leaning more into TWY territory on some tracks. Monica sounds like a TWY track off of Sister Cities
Glad I’m not the only one thinking this. YBF to WWIW to this has a similar growth and refinement of sound to how TWY grew from The Upsides to Suburbia to TGG.
For some reason I thought Eric Sparrow and Stickers of Brian would be on the album... Not even mad.. Monica is gut wrenchingly good.
the last album has one of the best three song opening runs in history but the rest fails to keep my attention in that way. this felt way more consistently great throughout
