Costner left Yellowstone to make this insane blank check that is getting not one but 2 coveted summer release dates next year. Gotta tip my hat to that

Interested to see how this will do for several reasons

    1) Costner has a very mixed to say the least record with big ambitious projects like this of his. When Costner takes a big swing and bombs (Waterwold, The Postman), he bombs spectacularly. If this succeeds it will be a gigantic validation for him.

    2) this is the project that Costner pretty much killed the current incarnation of Yellowstone to go do. Was he right to take the risk in fucking the most successful show on television for this? We will see

    3) this will be a taste test for modern audiences. Will very traditional western epic that could be easily scoffed as a "dad movie" by some be a summer hit in 2024? Also will the traditional western ( vs the more recently en vogue neo-western ) make comeback?

    4) Will releasing a summer movie in two parts a few months apart work as a strategy?

Man, you really feel all 2 hours and 50 minutes of this. Several different plot lines going at once, where scenes shift from one setting/plot line to another super fast. Costner’s character and John Dutton from Yellowstone are pretty much the same person. Some kind of bizarre camerawork too.

I enjoyed this. It is a bit jagged, and there’s a certain lack of polish overall that makes me wonder if things may have been rushed. The vibe and aura is there in spades, and there are a few truly great segments. Here’s hoping the second chapter delivers.

I don’t think that the film calls out to Yellowstone fans much at all. And I would think that a large portion of Yellowstone viewers are not the type to go to the theater often.

Yeah the article points out how there's a chance this ends up doing really well on VOD/streaming instead (like, I know my Dad would love to see this, but pretty low chance to get him to sit in a theatre for 3 hours straight, awake; much better chance of him watching it at home. He's obsessed with the Yellowstone show too, having seen each season multiple times).

I really enjoyed this, it’s definitely setting up for the next 3 (holy hell) movies but it’s gorgeous to look at and I’m interested to see where it goes.

I was probably the youngest person at the sold out show by 20+ years and the 2 older ladies next to me keep talking to each other but it kinda of enhanced the viewing because they would say “oh boy” or “is that necessary” during any of the violent parts.

I liked this much more than I expected to based on reviews. Easily a top 5 film I've seen so far this year. I prefer the slow paced, character/world building in the last 2 hours than the opening hour of the film. The first hour was pretty intense though.

The pacing and editing really helped this film as well. Focusing on each scene for roughly 15-20 minutes before jumping to the next made it seem much less convoluted than critics made me think it was going to be.
