One of the first rappers I properly got into when I first started listening to rap. I was holding out hope he’d pull through. This one hurts. Hope he’s finally at peace.

Everyone should watch his Versez with Snoop. He was clearly having the time of his life. It’s so sad how addiction can change you so quickly.

Anyone else crack up at the homophobic bars on Party Up or Where The Hood At? I find them hilarious tbh.

The “I don’t want to mess with you homos, but also imma slap you with my dick, dicksuckers” logic is always funny to me. Can’t get mad or upset.

Luv DMX's rampant homophobia. This one is a real knee slapper.

Last I heard, y'all ni**az was havin sex with the SAME sex
I show no love to homo thugs

And then there’s this from X Is Coming:

“And I'm gunnin' for your spouse, tryin' to send the bitch back to her maker
And if you got a daughter older than 15, I'ma rape her
Take her on the livin' room floor, right there in front of you”

When he did his versuz with snoop, he seemed a little “ehhh” on some of the verses. At least as some speculated.

Might as well sprinkle some transphobia in there too, why not.

I don't fuck with ni**az that think they broads

There’s also the animal cruelty, which for me is very hard to stomach. He was far, far from perfect. But like many are saying, him publicly and musically struggling with so many demons is what made him so important to many. That’s not to excuse anything. It is what it is.

DMX definitely leaned heavily into the shock factor, from homophobia to misogyny to sexual assault. It's gross to look back on. Those tracks are the ones I usually skip over.

I think they're missing the point that I'm laughing at someone's homophobia not along with it.

This past year or so really felt like a victory lap for DMX and his sobriety. He did the Verzuz, numerous interviews where he looked back on his legacy and that BET Ruff Ryders doc. It sucks that he's gone, but it really feels like he book-ended his career with a lot for people to reflect on.

He was that dog being abused. He embodied that image, that dog mentality, being abused for the purpose of violence, to be violent. Obviously that does not excuse anything, but it does add another layer to him and his work.

There is no excuse for his problematic and vile lyrics that I believe he became self aware of later in his career. Given his upbringing, life, and background it shouldn’t come as a surprise to many that a rapper big in the early 2000’s used shallow offensive shock value lyrics. No excuses, but certainly a product of his time and the awful culture his career was cultivated in.
