Is Cousin Stizz opening your date? I listened to his new record and it was surprisingly good.

I know this thread isn't exactly the target demographic for the most part but I saw Rich Brian tonight and he is actually excellent live. Had a full band and didn't use a backing track and rapped everything flawlessly

I actually love his album from this year, lyrics are nothing special for the most part but the production is amazing

I think he’s pretty solid. I like that whole label.

I don't really care for Rich Brian, but shout outs to rappers that have a live band and don't use backing tracks when performing.

I have never seen nor would I go see someone that raps with a backing track at an actual concert lol

Bands I don’t care about, nothing wrong with it but also nothing wrong with a DJ

A live band always feels like a step up, but also a lot of live bands feel like hired guns and don't really mesh well with the artist.

And then there are a lot of rappers who really just don't need a band for what they're doing and they sound great.

Have also never had to sit through the backing track performance, but that's bottom tier easy.

Depends on the rapper for me. Some have enough stage presence to not need a backing band(Freddie Gibbs immediately comes to mind) but a lot of others would really benefit from a backing band.

I just don’t think that a band’s interpretation of a beat is necessarily better than the actual beat. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. Also a great DJ can really add to the show.

Bad DJs can also ruin a show lol

This is why it feels stagnant a lot of times for really well-known rappers to play their songs with some talented studio musicians, everything is fine from a technical aspect, but in the end it feels kind of unnecessary.

Might be unpopular, but when I saw Kendrick's live show with a band in 2015, I thought it was kinda awful? He was great and it worked for the few TPAB tracks he played (this was a festival after the record came out but before he did any proper touring for it so we only got like 2-3 tracks from it) but I felt the GKMC tracks sounded horrible.

It definitely works for albums that have a live band-like production

When I saw Kendrick open for Kanye with a band, I thought it kinda sucked too. But I saw him again on the Kunta Grooves thing with a band and it was great. Can go either way for sure. I just appreciate artists that put a little effort into performing. Rappers that come out and mumble a few words while the CD plays can eat one.

I forgot he had the band on the Ye tour. That was bad too lol. When I saw him at the fest 2 years later it was the exact same set and visuals with a couple TPAB tracks wedged in there. I wish I could have seen the Kunta Grooves show.

Who's the worst live rapper that everyone's seen? YG was pretty terrible when I saw him
