A lot of Mac’s early work might have been a cheesy if technically promising interpretation of the music he loved, but he was a true student of hip hop. From what I have observed over the last 10 years, few if any of his peers have studied it as thoroughly as he did. He loved this culture with all he had. All these tweets from all kinds of rappers and artists, from Skyzoo to Talib to Jazzy Jeff and many others, about him approaching them even early on just highlights this again.

This one hurts, was super into when he first started the more frat rap and then he moved into topics that really were impacting my life at the time. His music was such an important part of getting me through some of those dark times that I was dealing with. Fuck man...

Yeah Mac improving so dramatically wasn’t an accident or a fluke. He worked hard as fuck to become the creative voice he ended up becoming

Mac literally did an Instagram Live like a few hours before... I'm not gonna post it in here but it's on Youtube. Perfect example of how fucking talented he was, he makes a great beat from scratch in about 15 minutes with a drum machine, keyboard and bass guitar

I'm not sure why this death has effected me the way it has. Like many, I wrote him off in the early days, but the fact he'd worked with the likes of Flying Lotus, Clams Casino, Action Bronson and Earl Sweatshirt on 'Watching Movies...' peaked my interest. That album was great and Faces was a great project too. But then kind of stopped listening to him that much, if at all. Didn't listen to GO:OD that much, i've only listened to Swimming once and i've literally listened to The Devine Feminine for the first time this morning (I know, I suck).

I think I like/liked the idea of him more than his music. If that makes sense. I really liked his music, but I love how he pushed himself as a person and evolved and wanted to do everything on his own terms. He was a smart dude and you can tell he was a true lover of all music, not just hip hop.

    I'm rambling. Blah.

I don’t really care about most of his discography (not in a bad way, it just doesn’t really capture my attention) but I think The Divine Feminine is very close to perfect and one of the most criminally underrated rap albums of the decade
