Mac Miller went from being basically shit to becoming one of my favorite rappers in the span of like a year and a half

I fucking love almost everything from Macadelic and on but pretty much actively avoid anything before that

I like Watching Movies, Delusional Thomas and The Devine Feminine, plus some random tracks. I'm still bitter the mixtape with Jazzy Jeff never came out.

When Mac first came on to the scene my tween nephew was obsessed. He even wrote K.I.D.S. on his backpack. Now he's 18 and loves J. Cole, YG, Kendrick and Schoolboy Q, haha. I think besides frat boys he also had a lot of little kids behind him early on.

 

K.I.D.S was actually okay, it's the stuff after that like Best Day Ever and Blue Slide Park that I couldn't get behind at all. I saw him this past December and he literally only did two pre-Macadelic songs and I couldn't have been happier. Macadelic, Watching Movies, Faces, GOOD A:M, and Divine Feminine are all great projects imo

 

K.I.D.S wasn't bad yeah from what I remember, I just wasn't into it. Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza was pretty chill, it came out of a lot of mini speakers at my high school, haha.

I pick this this one. I can't listen to it without getting goosebumps, haha. It's unbelievable to me that it did not make the album.

 

The Rapsody album is great.

There is a great Black Thought verse on there by the way.

I'm not on board with all of this, but it's pretty cool.

 

When you guys think about top 5 lists or top 10 list or whatever, are you guys able to separate the present from nostalgia? Because I'm not. I make two lists lmao

 

Seconded. I have very mixed feelings about lil wayne but I love 6’7.

I don’t quite understand. You mean like separating new and old hip hop for ranking purposes? Or separating something you currently enjoy from something you might only enjoy because of nostalgia?

They're kind of similar but I mostly mean the second. For example, there are artists I'm very excited about right now that don't have back catalogs that mean as much to me as some rappers have that I might be less excited about in 2017. I feel like that's a bad sentence but I hope it makes enough sense, haha. Also, it's hard to feel as strongly about any rapper now as I did about my favorites when I was a teenager, so a lot of rappers I loved then kind of cemented themselves in my top 10 even if I don't like their most current releases or whatever.

I get it. I have kind of the reverse problem where I could love something when it comes out, but I won’t know if it’s actually great unless I’m still listening to it 5+ years later. I can pretty easily separate the feeling of nostalgia because I’ll go “wow this sure brings back memories” at first but then end up skipping the song a minute in haha
