listening to the Drake albums today. starting with Iceman... actually pretty decent. overall it's too long and hearing him whine about losing the beef gets exhausting, so I still wouldn't consider it a success. he's only capable of writing lyrics about himself--dude's a total narcissist so the self-serious rap tracks make me roll my eyes. he tries his hand at a number of flow, some directly stolen from other artists, but I enjoyed some of the attempts. I generally prefer his more fun/less rappy-rap stuff which is why songs like Janice STFU and 2 Hard 4 The Radio are genuine bops. the beats are consistently great throughout, making the long listen much easier to get through. cut half and you have a good album. now onto Maid of Honor
Maid of Honor -- not bad at all! a shorter (for him) album of singing-Drake is genuinely the Drake I enjoy most. a lot of great bops on this especially the Sexyy Red song, with excellent, eclectic production throughout. a couple of clunker tracks and his voice gets a bit tiring after awhile but I admit he's onto something here. definitely better than Iceman and honestly something I could see myself throwing on again.
I quit a few tracks into Habibti. There was an interesting moment or two but mostly really boring stuff
I see jpegs “experimental rap” album is just a hodgepodge of different styles and not that experimental at all. I am shocked. SHOCKED.
The kids need real experimental rap. Big fan of clipping., Main Attrakionz, Edan, Dalek, Cannibal Ox, cLOUDDEAD… any others people can rec?
Injury Reserve, Billy Woods, Cities Aviv, Moor Mother, Company Flow, Kunteynir, the first Shabazz Palaces album. I have a headache so I know I'm missing plenty but that's all I could think of right now sorry
Death Grips is an obvious one that exists. Seconding Injury Reserve, although the new stuff is still extremely difficult for me to get into. Ironically, the beats on Some Rap Songs are probably more "experimental" than anything on the Peggy album.
I'm listening to some 00's DJ Khaled stuff and it's kinda depressing to remember how great Nicki, Kanye and Drake used to be at the time and now I can barely listen to any of them
Talking of Drake (sorrynotsorry), I just heard the track he did where he samples I Follow Rivers and… yeesh.
A very poor attempt at recapturing his mixtape magic with Little Bit, but not even remotely as good. side note, her new album is awesome
I also enjoyed Janice STFU. I promise it’s okay to experience mild entertainment while listening to some of his music, while holding space to think the man sucks overall.
I haven't listened to the new JPEG album yet but it was only a matter of time before he made the internet turn on him, his personality is fucking unbearable and his refusal to ever rap in anything but that one flow for the past few albums (which apparently carries into this new one) doesn't help I'll comment again when I actually listen lol
