I am not a fan of his, I’ve always felt like even his older stuff which was catchier with the hooks was just not for me, liked some features, can’t deny he’s a solid producer and rapper (JID is leagues better rap wise from Dreamville). I somehow listened to all of this last night, disk 1 had some stellar production, I don’t really feel inclined to listen to much 90s type stuff these days but a few of those beats definitely brought me back to some better days. There’s a couple more “hype”/Trap type songs that I actually think are fire, I see a lot of people outside of here saying disk 2 is better, I can’t agree. Maybe I got burnt out after being like 45 mins in but disk 2 was too slow and the production suffered from a fall off, of sorts Overall probably my best first impression of his, but outside of a couple songs I don’t feel like I need to revisit it. There’s a lot of homage and samples/takes on classic storytelling songs that have already been done, some people might appreciate a few of those
Idk how long each half is but I’d say the first disk didn’t feel like it dragged too much, plus having the two intros to make it feel like two separate albums kind of helps. Theres a few unexpected production choices/vocal approaches which im happy about, even if some of them ended up being pretty bad. Also there’s a pretty poorly worded “Auntie Diaries” type section on “Safety”, it’s supposed to come off as him growing with his views and acceptance but the phrasing…
Between this, the whole Noname Snow on tha Bluff thing, and the Kendrick diss, it feels like Cole goes through this cycle of saying stupid shit, "growing up" and apologizing for it, and then does it again in some other way lol
easily his best verse along with Sacrifices, when he's guesting on a track with someone who can really spit like JID and Saba he shows up for sure
True, but that's also exactly what the conversation was about, and you are in essence continuing that exact conversation and what we were discussing, so who is in the wrong now?!??!
turned off the j cole and went back to the esdeekid release I’ve slowly fallen more in love with it plus the new song rocks
Jermaine is a good rapper but can’t really write a song. The whole “I make my own beats” has definitely done more harm to his sound than good.
“The Villest” is a great song Idc, I still don’t have too many thoughts on the rest of the album but that one is special
Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon out of nowhere with a BNM. Hell yeah, hadn't kept up with him for a year or two so I wasn't even aware it was coming out.
