F&L was actually generally considered to be underwhelming when it came out. I really liked it though.

I really don’t think he lived up to his potential. When he popped up on Touch the Sky people thought he would be the next Kanye or Common. Instead he was the next, uh, Talib Kweli, but without Black Star.

Debut album from Prodigy of Mobb Deep’s daughter. Sounds exactly like an album by one of the grimiest NY emcees daughter to sound like. Even has some production from The Alchemist on it and a Boldy James feature.

I could argue that Lupe has 4 classics: F&L, The Cool, T&Y and Drogas Wave.

He definitely has some clunkers (F&L 2 and Drogas Lite are terrible. Not sure what Lasers is) but when Lupe is on, he is ON.

Lupe is one of the greatest rappers of all time but can't always pull the songwriting together for a full project every single. He's still done it several times though (in the albums listed above), and most of the subpar ones are victims of heavy label-tampering anyway. Haven't heard the new one yet but can't wait

I know there is this group of people (including you guys) that now ranks those albums highly, but that’s not what the consensus was when they came out, as far as I can remember. It was always “not quite there”. Of course the consensus can be wrong.

Consensus opinion doesn’t really matter to me against the quality of those albums. They’re growers anyway and only get better with time, but I know that’s not what a majority of rap fans care about.

Right, I get that, I’m just saying, overall Lupe’s career by many is considered to underwhelming as opposed to what people thought he would be when Touch The Sky came out. Those were probably unfair expectations anyway.

That’s fair. Kanye definitely got Lupe’s name out there with that song, and along with a few others, people consider that a definitive Lupe song (even though he’s just a feature). Interesting to compare the two, looking back on both their careers at this point in time. Everything you might say about Lupe could be true but, unlike Ye, he didn’t tarnish his own legacy / career.

I wonder if it was a gift or a curse that he let Airplanes slip through his fingers

After having seen Lupe perform at my college during the Lasers-era, definitely a gift lol. Never seen a musician more obviously depressed on-stage about the songs that they’re performing. I think the fact he’s become more and more of a lyrical / technical artist suits him, even if it means he’s underrated and not being hyped-up as much.

    about the actual album

I listened again today and everything after Kiosk is excellent. I don't love Precious Things that much either. REALLY back-heavy album. Love the production throughout though. Last three songs are unreal.

damn Precious Things is great imo, gorgeous production

fully agree the second half of the album is stacked tho. Ms Mural into Naomi is powerful stuff

Andrew Barber is always cool with the fun facts and it still reminds me I soon need to do my deep dive on dj screw production. So many hits he produced.
