Those lists are meant to make people angry but Cardi B top 20 over Illmatic has got to be a trap.

What's funny is that Illmatic is ranked No. 44 on the Rolling Stone's Greatest 500 Albums of All-Time and now it's not even a Top 20 hip hop record.

    Rolling Stone is drunk.

  18. Rolling Stone is no better than Pitchfork, which is no better than Consequence of Sound, which is no better than...it's all just opinion that we've given some additional weight to due to the name of the publication. I say that as someone who still (very occasionally) writes for this site lol.

these days I try to just look at the positive side of bad lists like this... the Top 10 is a really solid group of albums

I was about to same the same thing as Steve. Up until 10 there’s a lot of WTF. But the top 10 is actually a pretty good collection.

It’s really hard to compare modern stuff with albums that have been out for a long time, some shit is really great when it comes out and then ages poorly or even just gets forgotten about. Anything in the last like five years is really hard to rank against albums that have stuck around for decades.

I liked the Cardi album but I don’t think I’ve gone back to it. Cultural impact was massive in the moment but does it have the long term effect of a lot of these other albums? I don’t know, it’s really hard to say because it’s been like a couple years.
