    Got a light?

One listen in and it’s so good but it’s hard to say anything yet about how it holds up to his last album because that was so amazing and had so many bops

The Cool Kids album is really solid, this was my first time really getting into them. Went through the whole discography

    How are their solo albums?

Not like it’s a surprise or anything but Tana Talk 4 is very very good

Late Nights the tape on streaming now. Just as utterly fantastic as ever. I remember when he almost passed from COVID a few years back. We very nearly lost a huge talent.

If Tana Talk 4 is even half as good the new Conway, I'll be very happy.

listening to this rn. wasn't convinced at the start but it's been really picking up from the T-Pain song onwards. dude definitely is onto something here

random thought I had today, I wish hip hop artists did cover albums or even cover songs more often. I know it's much more of a rock n' roll thing since basically the dawn of time, but most genres have taken it on in one way or another. I think remix albums are the closest that hip hop artists get, but it would be pretty fucking cool to hear modern artists take on older tracks. Just spitballin' because he was just mentioned, but imagine T-Pain doing a covers album where he reinterprets the classics. The Roots are an easy one, but they have a full band so it feels more natural (and I guess they do mini-covers every night with the late night show they are on).

I get that it's probably due to the really personal stories told lyrically, maybe artists don't feel comfortable telling those same stories that are not their own, but anyway... just a thought I had today.

I still listen to Denzel's Bulls on Parade like every week so I agree

also, The Roots have a solid history of covering songs and adding original Thought verses to make absolute rippers. The Seed 2.0 and Star/Pointro for example

  23. Caught R.A.P. Ferreira and Pink Navel tonight, both sets were pretty short but they both killed and it was free at a hip hop shop downtown so no complaints from me. Finally got a copy of Bob’s Son on wax too

The closest things are reinterpretations but with different lyrics and so on. This is a recent one.

I don’t think it’s necessarily about lyrics being too personal, it’s about rapping someone else’s lyrics period. However, maybe that’ll change in a post-Drake world.

In R&B covers used to be a thing, but I haven’t heard one in a while.

Hip hop is essentially a covers genre if you think about it. Not covers in a traditional sense, but the genre is built around sampling. And although it’s not technically a cover, it is taking a song and putting your spin on it. Some samples are obvious and some aren’t, much like some cover songs.
