I know I'm an old head but as a Hip Hop fan first and foremost I was/am dismayed by the fact that crowds at rap shows started behaving like "rock" crowds. It was pretty rare before (though some niches always did it), now it is more and more common and mainstream and it suuuuuucks. You are right that it could be much better if they understood the community aspect, but even then I fucking hate it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't know who exactly is to blame either. It's probably partly artists who idealized rock crowds like you said, but I would guess it's also the fact that rap has replaced rock as the default genre and people socialised on rock invaded rap crowds. As usual, they made it worse. Just like they made music writing about rap worse.
