if no DJ and no backing track, is he touring with a full band?

 

I would guess backing track is in reference to a vocal track?

When I saw him before it was only him on stage and I think he had his phone or something hooked to the soundsystem to play his beats.

 

DJ are very much Hip Hop though lol

Like a good rapper/DJ duo on stage is amazing

 

yeah that's why I was asking haha, I totally get "no backing track" and "no hypeman" as a back to basics kinda thing, but "no dj" threw me off. Like.... what is making the music lol. From above it sounds like he just plays the beats off his phone? Honestly sounds less exciting than a DJ or a band, zero room for any improvisation or variety

 

Having seen him, I don't really know that there is a space for a DJ in his style of performance. It's feels much more rooted in punk or hardcore than any other hip hop show I've seen. It's very much about his energy and I get the sense that anything extra would clash with that.

 

A good hip hop show needs a good DJ. Even if you've got a band, a DJ is still an important part of the band.

 

considering a jpeg show is like non stop high energy moshing, i doubt any of the kids in the crowd care about the lack of DJ lol.. He gets a crowd going more than almost any artist out there with just an iphone and his charisma.

 

I'd agree that a DJ is typically necessary, but no backing track or hypemen is 100% the way to go.

 

Good hypemen do exist, it’s just that most hypemen aren’t actually hypemen

 

A good hype man can really improve a show.

 

A good DJ, or rather a good turntablist, really can make a show even more energetic though. I get that his fans might not miss one, but partly because they might not know what they're missing. Not saying that his shows aren't good btw.

 

Damien Marley's hypeman is my favorite, literally runs around with a huge Jamacian flag, like HUGE, the entire set and never gets tired. Full energy the entire time hah

 

I mean I could go to the Rihanna thread to put this but I’m lazy but man I have been having the songs from ANTI stuck in my head. I need new music from here ASAP.
