I disagree. The list should be personal. No one makes a top 50 movies list and doesn't put their personal favorites.

I mean, you can read these lists as you want. I personally do not see them as "My 50 Favorite Rappers" but as "The 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time." Like publications putting out end of the decade lists right now, it's "The 100 Best Albums of the Decade" not "Our 100 Favorite Albums of the Decade." Obviously a lot of personal taste goes into it, but the point is how you view the lists

i am BARELY a drake fan but....how.....can anyone NOT have him in top 50? Dude is one of the biggest and most successful musicians EVER. He also aint some mackelmore style rapper where he just sells a lot cause of pop appeal. There was a time where every artist ever was praising him and envious of his song writing abilities and lyrics.

I don’t care how successful he is, he’s not as good a rapper as many, many others are. Rapper, not popstar or whatever mind you. Also Macklemore, as corny as his music is, at least writes his own lyrics lol he even was a successful freestyle battle rapper at some point.

see i guess the question i go into these lists with is are they the "top 50 best RAPPERS" or just "top 50 hip hop artists" , i get the sense most of these lists go for the former. Cause yea if its just top 50 most skilled rappers then theres a lot of people who shouldnt be near the top of that list

I also wouldn’t put him near a top 10 of best hip hop artists. There’s many rappers that made albums that are so much better than Drake’s imo. Some rap better, some don’t. For me, a list like that should be a combination of several aspects, but Drake is too lacking in some aspects to be up there. Drake is so omnipresent now that he makes it onto lists like that easily though. We’ll see where he ranks in 10-20 years.

Btw I’m not arguing against him being in someone’s top 50. He wouldn’t be in mine but yeah. Just please God not top 10 lol

That being said I also don’t really care, I just like talking about rap lists lol

MGK put Lil Jon on his first album when Lil Jon was in between periods in which the internet thought he was cool and I kinda fucked with that

I missed this earlier so its fallen into memes, but I think there is a very meaty discussion here.

Because the core of this issue falls into what people look for in hip-hop. If "Best Rapper" means best RAPPER: BARS, lyrics, flow, punchlines, etc. vs. BEST rapper: which rapper makes the best music.

There are a lot of technically good rappers who can't write a song for shit or make a classic album. There are a lot of rappers who have produced incredible works of art that don't have the best pure lyrical content. Sometimes artists can do both, but even then they have songs with different focuses. And it goes to show just how varied hip hop as a genre has become, where rappers can approach the art form with entirely different goals and find success and fans and people that think what they're doing is the best.

Anyway, slightly related, my hip hop jazz band is releasing an album 11/1, I put together a preview video for the announcement, and I found myself mostly selecting clips of melodic/instrumental sections I like. More so than the lyrics, those are the sections that really blow me away, both for the music I am a part of and the music I hear from other people.

Not that it really matters but that list isn't strictly TI's, it's him and the other people on his podcast's collective list. He posted it on his own Instagram and he's been responding to people in the comments telling them changes he would have made

True. Like I said, for me personally it’s about a combination of a number of factors. I have plenty of rappers on my list that aren’t among the best technically that make up for it in other ways. Still can’t let Drake in a top 10 slide like that lol

A lot of it comes down to personal preference, but its very interesting to me what factors make up each individual personal preference.

ANyway, Will Smith is the best rapper of all time I gotta go stream not lovely bye!

Will Smith is maybe the most underrated rapper of all time, although I guess his record sales would suggest otherwise

This is very much a fact too :crylaugh: I could never make a ranked top 50.
