It doesn't bother me necessarily that people's favorites are newer stuff. Opinions are subjective and everyone likes what they like. It's all good. In fact, I'm glad that artists are still putting out new exciting music that people feel is the best of the genre. It just makes me think that a lot of older stuff isn't being listened to by a broad younger audience.

If people were asked to name their top 10 films and they only named movies from the last 5 years, I'd assume they hadn't seen older movies. It's just interesting.

i mean its extremely obvious why this happens. it doesnt mean people arent listening to old stuff. thats a wild assumption. its quite the contrary actually, pretty sure everyone in this thread has listened to the classics or at least has asked in this thread what classics to listen to because they are interested. but the stuff that's gonna resonate, the (majority of) stuff that makes a lasting impact is what comes out while you're currently paying attention and engaging with the culture in real time.

Throwing on some lesser known oldies today bc of this thread-- already listened to Deltron 3030, Talib Kweli and Madlib's Liberation, and now putting on some Witchdoctor (S.W.A.T. Healing Ritual is an incredibly underrated, strange, and beautiful debut)

I think the way i consume music makes a big difference for when it comes to new/old hip hop (and music in general). Back in the day, I had to record my favourite albums to cassette or mini disc, so only my favourites got recorded. There’s so much stuff these days and so many ways to listen, a lot can get lost as more and more music gets released. It’s a good problem to have because I love finding new music, but I can’t help but feel it’s harder for one album to properly stand out as a classic these days. It certainly feels that way to me, anyway.

    Fuck, I’m old

  11. Making a top 10 was tough. I'm 23, been listening to hip-hop since 2009 but I've only seriously started digging into it around 2012 thanks to a few ap.net users who will probably recognize themselves if they read this. I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of the genre, as there are a few eras I'm mostly ignorant of such as most of the stuff that was popular in the mid 00's, or subgenres or movements like hyphy for example. I still haven't listened to a ton of what people would call classic albums, or if I did, it was when I was way too young and unfamiliar with the culture surrounding the genre to understand the themes explored.

Cage, Shad, Kanye, Lupe Fiasco, P.O.S., Jay Electronica, Young Jeezy, Sims, among others are the rappers that got me into the genre, as well as a lot of japanese jazzhop artists. I haven't listened to a few (Cage, P.O.S., Young Jeezy) of these in years, and don't know if they hold up or if I would still be into them today though.

As of now, my list would probably look like this:

    Missy Elliott - The Cookbook
Kanye West - Late Registration or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory
    Blue Scholars - Bayani
Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste
Big K.R.I.T. - Return Of 4eva (4eva Is A Mighty Long Time might take its place though)
    Shad - TSOL
Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid M.A.A.D City
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill
The Roots - How I Got Over

Now that I'm caught up, I'm looking forward to be more active in this thread!

I respect that, I never really felt like Nas was a nice guy to begin with, I just truly believe that Illmatic is one of the best albums of music history

Okay yeah beyond that I can’t choose. The genre has only gotten more impressive as time goes on. Thug is easily my favorite artist of all time, as my list clearly indicates.
