Right but also the ability to articulate why you like something isn't necessary.

Music is the best medium because it works as pure visceral and emotional response AND can be analyzed on a deeper level.

If someone doesn't want to go into why they like something they don't have to. No ones saying they do. Doesn't mean it's not okay to ask

Not saying it's not okay to ask. But the connotation when someone can't articulate why they like him has been exclusively negative. I definitely can't tell you why I love Mingus. I could bullshit you something that feels logical to me, but that's all it'd be.

I think it's fair to say that people not being able to articulate their love for something can cause a disconnect between those that love it and those that don't. That's what's happening with j Cole and that's what the point of all this is. People love him but can't quite explain why, people who don't continue not to understand it. The world keeps spinning and the two groups continue to have their stances. I don't know if it's negative but I'm sure not any closer to understanding why j Cole gets praise, and maybe that sounds negative

  8. For the most part, I like Cole's lyrics, flow, and content. That's "why" I, and probably most other fans, like him. Does it need more explanation than that? It's ok not to like him.

I'll forever hate that he thought "I let you feel like you the shit, but boy you can't out-fart me" was a dope line to put on his debut album, though lol.

J Cole is like a ham and cheese sandwich on white bread, its nothing special but its not bad and people like it, people grew up on it, people have it for lunch every day sometimes. There's some meat on there, the cheese is kraft singles and the bread is generic store brand but like if I'm hungry its fine with a bag of chips.

I mean, it's fine to ask people why they like him if you genuinely don't get it and are trying to understand, but there are far worst artists that people gravitate to that make far less sense than Cole.

Daniel Son is definitely my favorite 2 Chainz project of the year. The beat on Big Amount is insane to me. Maybe I need to go back to Collegrove.

That and Felt Like Cappin are pretty damn good. Not a huge fan of either of his BOATS records. I like the pseudo-grunge bassline on "You In Luv With Her"

couldnt u say that about any artist other than j cole?

in regards to an artists mass appeal

why are people only confused about j coles popularity

because j cole fans say things like "you need a certain mindset/iq to get what cole says" or otherwise denigrate other hip hop artists. plus on paper he sounds like something a lot of critics would like! a popular, mass audience-oriented rapper with conscious and reverential tendencies plus a solid production background? sounds like catnip. yet the connection isnt there. people want to know why.

The only time I've heard J Cole is his verse at the beginning of Jeremih's album. Which is one of the worst things I've ever heard. You can probably understand why I've never gone out my way to listen to him!
