For those of you that are interested in hip hop history beyond the beaten path, I recommend this interview with veteran writer and sociology professor Oliver Wang. He wrote a book called Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the San Francisco Bay Area, which, as the title says, is about Filipino American mobile DJ crews that were huge in the Bay Area (as well as other parts of California) in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Among other things, this scene birthed much of what we think of as turntablism today (well known turntablists such as DJ Qbert and Mix Master Mike started in this scene). It's a very interesting interview (and especially book), partly because it highlights the often overlooked diversity in early hip hop music and culture.

Last year gave us the dope Uzi, Yachty, 21, Denzel Curry cypher so I knew I would find any cover this year disappointing. Sick for Playboi and Kamaiyah though.
