Boston doesn't really have anything but Michael Christmas is really good and I've heard good things about Cousin Stizz. And of course Guru

me living in Fresno has allowed me to see the Bay Area hip hop scene and also the LA one. It's always cool to see which scene has the current big hits between the two.

When I lived in Germany (during my late teen years) the area I lived in (a large metropolitan area comprised of several cities that haven't been doing too well in a long time) was dominating German rap to a certain extent and it was really exciting. It meant a lot to us and a lot of other kids at the time.

You know, I remember hearing about it and getting excited, but I never watched video of it until just now and it's pretty amazing, so thanks for the reminder. I'm really glad that got to happen before the untimely death of Chris Kelly, RIP.

I love listening to the throwback hip hop station here because it typically plays 2000's-2008's stuff the most. This came on and I was like yooooooo this was so tight:

It also made me think of this and how we are never getting the A-Trak/Cam'ron EP:

It'd be so difficult to make a personal top 10, I'm impressed you're able to do it

  12. There are probably 25 rappers in my top 10, I so often find myself saying "yeah x rapper is easily top 10 all time"

Making a top 10 is hard for me for that reason but also because it's hard for me not fall back on nostalgia in that case

First rap albums were College Dropout, Food & Liquor, and MMLP, all lent to me by my cousin. I didn't go to a rap show until 2014 though when I saw Childish Gambino. Been to a ton now though

I went to a lot of rap shows for a while and then I moved to a place where there aren't any and I'm too lazy to drive two hours to see 90% of the artists I would theoretically be interested in, so now I mainly go to Pop Punk shows because we do have those around here lmao. I do miss it though.

First rap show was Eminem, Xzibit and Mark B & Blade at London Arena in 2000. Was only my second ever gig and my first was Papa Roach/Hed(PE) the week before. Teen angst was strong in this one.

First rap show was probably Kottonmouth Kings if that even counts. Otherwise, maybe Curren$y/Method Man/Big KRIT, which was about 7 years ago.

I always listened to rap, but in high school I was mostly a metal head so none of my friends were interested in rap shows, but I went to LOTS of rock/metal/punk shows back then. Have been trying to make up for lost time with hip hop shows now.

Growing up in Northern California everyone was on the hyphi train.

So naturally Mac Dre, and Andre Nickatina were my introductions to hip hop. The eventually Ye, and Wu Tang.

I think The Chronic was probably my introduction to hip hop (beyond Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Kris Kross). I remember hearing Fuck With Dre Day for the first time when I was 9 and it blew my mind.

I'll probably get shit for this, but I find Joey Bada$$ to be as vanilla of a rapper as J Cole is. I find both to be fine, but completely and utterly unremarkable and bring nothing new to the table (or interesting, in my opinion)

I think Cole at his best is leaps and bounds ahead of Joey at his best. I don't see Joey making songs like 4 Your Eyez Only, or Power Trip for that matter.

By the way: the newest episode of the NYT Popcast is about Kendrick and Cole and they talk a lot about how Cole actually underwent a artistic transformation recently. They also talk about them in the context of hip hop and religion. It's a great episode.
