my first actual rap concert would have been Kanye West's The Life Of Pablo tour but he canceled the tour the day before my date.

and I'm also debating going to the local festival Fashawn hosts here this weekend. He's performing alongside E40, Lupe Fiasco and Dilated People.

I feel weird going to hip hop concerts, tbh, unless it's like a festival or something

First one I really count is Austin City Limits where I saw Nas and Kanye. I think it was 2011? It was the wall so after MBDTF.

Sounds like a good show. Man I loved Fashawn's first album.

First one was Outkast at Coachella weekend 2 in 2014. It was phenomenal

I only got to see him that once and it was Nas+Damian Marley (but they played solo stuff outside of Distant Relatives obviously) but it was a great show.

I don't think I've been, tbh. I will be seeing Chance in a few weeks so that will be exciting

Nas is still being booked for every big European Reggae festival of Distant Relatives haha

Yeah they went deep. A lot of skateboarding movies from that time had great rap soundtracks too.

I will always have mad love for Fashawn. He has helped to supported Fresno's schools and also the city with his festival.

It's also fun to hear his Fresno shoutouts in his songs.

It took me awhile before I started going to hip-hop shows, and the first one I saw was Lupe Fiasco. He had a live band with him and the crowd was huge. I think this was when Superstar first came out and I was a little disappointed, to be completely honest

A few years later saw Lupe again and it was a great show, despite at one point he berated the audience for god knows why

Sorry for double posting but holy shit old Black Eyed Peas were pretty good. I remember digging deep into their pre-Fergie stuff and was blown away by pretty much everything from the beats to their flows to the subject matter. And in all honesty, Elephunk isn't actually too bad returning to it now. It's all over the place and the lyrics are cringeworthy af but I think I'd prefer it to a lot of other stuff that's currently popular

Pretty much everyone my age in St. Louis got into hip hop through nelly

  22. The first time I really remember being into rap was 7th/8th grade when Lil Wayne was really blowing up in the Carter 3 era. That album and his features (The Game "My Life" comes to mind) were the first time I think I understood hip hop. T Pain was huge too, Jay Z Blueprint 3, TI, Kanye I guess but this would have been the 808s era so I think I probably moreso categorized him with pop music. Whatever was on Z100 haha.

Then when I was 16, my best friend was really into rap and in the summer going into junior year when he had his license and we really starting going out and driving around all the time, he got me into MBDTF and the older Kanye LPs, J Cole's Friday Night Lights (this was the summer "Work Out" came out and we played it non-stop), the first handful of Odd Future tapes (Bastard, Earl, Nostalgia Ultra), Macklemore's tapes prior to The Heist, Cunninglynguists, Grieves was big for us, and a lot of the classics I had missed like Nas, Tribe, shit like that. That was also one of my first warped tours, we went just to see Less Than Jake and Grieves lol. It's cool that we can still put on basically any album from that era and bond over how much time we spent together listening to music that summer.

Cunninlynguists were amazing haha. I also remember being heavily into MF DOOM, especially Madvillain during high school. Still love him too

Dallas had...The D.O.C. Which is cool and all but it never felt like "Oh yeah it's this Dallas hip hop wave going on" or whatever. It makes me wish I got to grow up around Houston and hear that hip hop scene emerging.

We do have Erykah Badu though who is amazing and as a result Andre 3000 lives here for about half the year which is cool.
