It sounds a lot less "real" when I mention I got into Internal Affairs because I liked Pharoahe Monch's verse on a Linkin Park song, hahaha

I may have been into Pac and Nas in the 90s, but I also was into Kris Kross and Vanilla Ice, so I wouldn't say I was listening to the "real" stuff

You don't get more real than HAMMER. Although, tbf, my first into to rap was probably Come Baby Come by K7. Now THAT was a banger.

Also, Elephunk being your intro to hip hop makes me feel old as fuck. Wasn't that when they stopped being hip hop, though? Joints and Jams is probably the only good BEP song if i'm honest.

Elephunk was very differnt from their first two albums but in many ways still pretty much a "regular rap" album (except for Shut Up), it just wasn't good

I don't think I really listened to hip hop until my middle school years.

like my childhood a lot of my dads family would play a lot of west coast 90's hip hop but I never really paid attention.

I then started to pay attention right when the soul sample beats era took over MTV.

I was such a fake little rap snob too as 12 year old, I remember snarkingly shaking my head when two of my friends discussed whether 50 Cent or Eminem was the best rapper, trying to tell them about all the shit I knew lmao

Aside from being a casual fan of whatever was on the radio/tv, I guess Eminem was the first hip hop dude that really got my friends and I interested album wise. Partly because he was a white dude and partly because of how obscene the shit he was saying was. I remember being at a baseball game and everyone singing the lyrics to his LFO parody and me being super jealous because my mom wouldn't let me even get the edited version of the CD.

Nelly and Ja Rule were two that I fell in love with based off singles that I then went out and got full albums. I spun their stuff all the time. When Hardball came out I got into Biggie since Big Poppa was in the movie. I guess Jock Jams was pretty influential in terms of me hearing Mo Money Mo Problems at like 6/7 years old. Same with Tony Hawk/Dave Mira/NBA Street. Remember being blown away by the T.R.O.Y. beat on Street.

When Napster became a thing I really got into rap because I could finally find the uncensored versions of songs that I wanted to hear. When I was in 7th or 8th grade I raided my cousin's album collection and found Public Enemy, Eazy E, Dre, Snoop. By the time TCD came out I was already mostly listening to hip hop in addition to Blink 182 and Green Day. I rolled mainly with the pop punk stuff and the old school hip hop canon until high school when I branched out more into everything else.

Was Dave Mirra the game that had Jayou by Jurassic 5 on it or was that a different game

Because that's definitely the first hip hop SONG I heard haha

You misunderstood my post. I was a HUGE fan of both the Daddy Mack and the Mack Daddy. I wore my pants backwards for Halloween and if my parents would have let me, I probably would've shaved my eyebrows.

I had the entire KK discography, my man. Everything from "Totally Krossed Out" to "Young, Rich and Dangerous" to the damn remix album.

The Tony Hawk series was an introduction to hip-hop for me as well, but I didn't really seek out any albums until 2008. For me, the first two albums I bought were Tha Carter III and 808s & Heartbreak. I suppose those were the same for many middle schoolers back in that year.

    What about first rap concert?

I'm 99% sure mine was Fat Joe in 05 (if I remember it correctly with DJ Khaled as Joe's DJ). I'm kind of disturbed by the fact that I'm not a 100% sure though.
