Same, my favourites are Mac Miller, AJ Tracey and Central Cee, but I can’t say I have listened to them a lot so far

We’re halfway through and so far it is easily the worst decade for rap music

  7. Definitely.

I really love select MIKE tracks, but the mumble kind of gets to me when I try full projects. Which is funny because I love Earl, who obviously has adopted that style. Maybe I'll check out the Saba record today

Yeah the Saba/No ID tape and Billy are my main front runners.

The Mac Miller album is really good, but also depressing to listen to if you know his story, too depressing for me really

I think the Saba/No ID tape is fine, but it also kind of an example of why it is a bad decade, because it is great example of "hey this is good but I have heard this plenty of times before but better"

  11. I have not returned to the Mac album much, unfortunately. Didn't think it was bad, maybe just haven't been in the mood for it.

That also makes me less excited to check out the Saba tape lol

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

clipping is definitely my favourite OTY so far but bracing for JID to steal that crown in August

Most of the Hip Hop - or let’s say “urban music” - that has really tickled me since like the mid 2010’s has been European (incl. UK), but that too has gone way down this decade in terms of vibrancy and frankly relevance. Still, that’s where most of the records in these genres I listen to the most come from.

I feel the exact opposite with Showbiz in particular, it’s so hypnotic on full and easy to get lost in, everything flows so well and his style blends in and compliments all of music in such a strangely beautiful way.

but also the opposite for the Tony Seltzer project so you might like that more

Also strongly disagree with the "this is the worst decade for rap" argument too. Mainstream maybe, but it's been thriving in the underground/independent scene. Pisses all over the 2000s too, that was easily the worst decade for mainstream rap. Also a good decade for underground stuff too coincidently. Probably the best.

Underground rap has always been good though, and it is definitely spinning its wheels too compared to the last decade. There hasn't been anything new there either, just more of it. Strongly disagree on the mainstream rap part. That has been completely floundering this decade (which is also my main point, since I think the mainstream side really matters when comparing rap decades), whereas in the 00s it was way more of a cultural force (I refuse to compare todays streaming numbers to actual record sales to measure relevance).

EDIT: 00s mainstream rap was profoundly kneecapped too by the near-collapse of the music industry in the middle and later half of the decade. It “ended” (compared to where they would or could have been) a lot of careers because they lost momentum through no fault of their own (in some cases the law enforcement also played a part). The result was that most of the stars that managed to stay relevant into the next decade(s) were either firmly rooted in the 90s and had already built a strong foundation (Jay Z, to some extent Eminem) or came up towards the end of the decade when streaming turned it all around (Drake). The first five years or so were huge though. The first five years of this decade are way less vibrant compared to that.
