I’m currently going through Jay Z discography and idk why but his first two albums were good but they didn’t hit for me like they do most people.

I’m also not one of those people that thinks Reasonable Doubt is his best work. It’s good, sometimes great, but if you ask me it isn’t what Jay was meant to make.

Personally didn't get into Jay's stuff until The Black Album, which is by far my favorite Jay album.

I was too much of a Nas stan to care for anything prior to that, although I legit hated Vol. 2, Vol. 3 & The Dynasty - even before the Nas beef came to light.

    You don’t like The Blueprint?

Not during the time it was released (as mentioned earlier, I was such a Nas fan that it wasn't cool to like Jay-Z during that time, haha). I've gone back to it many times in the past 10-15 years and like it. I don't think it lives up to its debated GOAT album, but it's good, yeah.

I think they’re basically equally good, but so different that’s one can go either way

Speaking of Nas, I recently listened to Stillmatic again for the first time in proby15 years. It’s cool, but I distinctively remember quite a lot of people in the early to mid 00s saying it might as good or better than Illmatic, which now just seems insane.

Stillmatic is my favorite Nas album, so I'd be one of those people, haha.

Don't get me wrong, illmatic is no doubt better, but I enjoy Stillmatic more.

I like the redemption of Stillmatic. Nas had fallen off - almost completely. Nobody expected for him to make that album or to regain relevancy. And then the fact he was able to release The Lost Tapes and then God's Son all in a 12 month span was really impressive. Obviously, The Lost Tapes was older material, but what a 3-album run.

I only got through 3 jay z albums on my ride home from la so I ranked them so far

    Vol 2 > Reasonable Doubt > Vol 1

I think volume 2 has some of my favorites like money cash hoes, coming of age, and of course the hits.

Coming of Age was the only song I remember liking on Vol. 2 and it's mostly because of Bleek.

New Nudy tape from a few weeks ago is pretty damn good. Probably his best. Short and sweet too.

People don't really talk about how inconsistent Jay was in the 90's. Several incredible songs but the Vol albums and the Dynasty have a decent amount of filler (and a few outright bad songs)

Potentially hot take but I think he's a lot more consistent starting with the Blueprint

This is nerdy but the new Serato update is huge. Basically, it lets you automatically isolate the vocal track or instrumental from any song.
