    Fun must be always. Prestigious

I just looked at all the album releases and I think the only ones that I kept going back to were the Denzel Curry one and the Vince Staples one.

most other releases I liked a few songs on them but not a whole project worth.

I also haven’t been able to fully enjoy a Kendrick album since to pimp a butterfly. Idk. They probably are just too dense for me since I can’t really pick singles I like from it.

The Rosalia album feels like a hip hop album in spirit and is excellent.

Anyway, my point wasn’t that there aren’t any good projects (together we could probably come up with a list of like 20 great records), but rather that there seems to be no real momentum, especially in the mainstream. I can’t really pinpoint it. Maybe it’s also my shitty mood influencing my perception :crylaugh:

I would not say this year has been a down year by any means. Black Thought is amazing, so is Billy Woods and so is Denzel Curry. Kendrick (controversial?), Armand Hammer, Pusha, Conway, Boldy James, Black Star, and Ghais Guevara (everyone here should check him out) are just some to name off that are all great.

I saw a funny tweet that was like, The Game starts the track saying how much he DOESN'T listen to Eminem's albums, then drops 8 minutes of references to his music haha

  7. Just to clarify I was mostly just riffing on the “collection of songs” type of albums being popular right now haha. Re: stagnation in the genre I definitely agree with the sentiments Jake and Moose are putting out there

Yes! Been meaning to post about him for a couple of weeks. He’s a bit like jpegmafia if he was interested in rap more than he is pop.

I assume that’s what he meant when he said Armand Hammer because they haven’t put out an album this year. I think they may have released a tour only project, but nothing official.

Kendrick album rules imo, better than damn for me.
    Pusha’s album is top notch.
    Vince’s album is amazing.
Boldy James is the best and his album fucking slays.
    Gunna’s album rules.
    Babyface Ray was good.
    Currensy and Alchemist did good.
    Loved Westside’s album.
Danger Mouse and Black Thought is fantastic too.

I think it’s been a fun year but music is coming and going so fast now a days.

Nah, not having that this year hasn’t been all that. We’ve had really fucking good releases from billy woods, Earl, E L U C I D, Kendrick, Boldy, Moor Mother, Action Bronson, Fly Anakin, Pan Amsterdam, The Cool Kids, Benny, Westside Gunn, Droog, Quelle Chris, Ghais Guevara, Wilma Vritra.

Sure there have been more, can’t think off the top of my head.

That theater song on Kendrick’s album has to be the worst song made by a good rapper in a while

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I honestly forgot Saba was this year. February feels like years ago already

that's probably my favourite of the year so far but Thought is giving it a run for its money

Insanely excited for the JID album. The single's insane and the features & one-offs he's dropped in the past year have featured just untouchable rapping. Fully expecting this to be my rap AOTY.

    hey you lil piss baby

Lots of great stuff for me this year but mostly outside of the bigger or more established or obvious names.

Yung Kayo - DFTK ("post" Young Thug style, pulls in some interesting collaborators like avant-pop auteur Eartheater and PC Music producer umru, probably my rap AOTY)
Duke Deuce - CRUNKSTAR (crunk revival, overlong and a bit inconsistent but has some great highlights including the Glorilla collaboration "Just Say That")
    Duwap Kaine - A Dogg's Influence/Faith Like Esther
Asian Doll - Let's Do a Drill (NY style drill out of Texas)
Shawny Binladen - Merry Wickmas 2 (Deluxe), Wick City, Wick City (Deluxe), Wick the Wizard ("sample drill")
rodneyy - #Ogtg (bit of a Playboi Carti clone but one of the only ones doing the style almost as good as Carti himself)
Tony Shhnow - Reflexions (Atlanta rapper)
Mozzy - Survivor's Guilt (Mozzy doesn't need an introduction)
    RealYungPhil - Dr. Philvinci

Some strong ones out of the Flint/Detroit/Michigan scene:
Shaudy Kash & Top$ide - On the Yeah Side
Icewear Vezzo - Rich Off Pints 3 (has E-40 slidding over one of these Michigan style beats, a fascinating combination)
KrispyLife Kidd - The Art of Spice Talk 3
    BabyTron - Megatron
BangGang Lonnie Bands - Scorpion Eyes

    and some great singles

legacy affirming verse from Drakeo on this one

best drill track of the year?

I never seem to find out about American drill unless it is like Fivio, which is interesting because UK or European drill does find me

I know I have mentioned it in here before but I interviewed Obie Trice in 2005 or 2006. I was such a huge fan of his first album. Second album was OK and then he just kind of fell off the face of the earth.

    hey you lil piss baby

Highly recommend the Asian Doll record which plays a lot with the same sound and has a bunch of outrageous features from rappers I've mostly never heard of.

Kenzo B is on the come up too, this is my favourite from her so far

but yeah that Ice Spice track is just way too hard, very hyped to hear more from her
