New Domo Genesis album will definitely go under the radar but I think it's some of his best work ever. Entirely produced by Evidence and his rapping is only getting better

Really hard to talk about it without sounding too “old man yells at cloud” about it but so many releases feel so disposable. Even the Griselda stuff (which I love) feels just like collections of songs rather than albums, for the most part — and there’s new ones every month. The new Saba record feels like it was so carefully crafted and methodical, and it feels like the exception these days.

I think there have been a few standout Griselda releases (particularly the newest Benny and Conway) but agree that even those get diluted because of their enormous output.

The new Benny and Conway are definitely exceptions, great records, but they could use an in-house editor

I don’t think they care about album cohesion, that’s not the type of rappers they are

Nail on head with the collection of songs comment. I find myself listening to music a lot these days more for the ~vibe and a little less for the “album” experience, so those records are kinda perfect for that. But it does feel like we’re seeing more rappers lean into that rather than trying to create more... composed? projects

On the flip side there have definitely still been a few “album” albums out this year. Saba, Tobi Lou, Vince, Earl, Redveil, Kendrick, Dave East, and Joey Bada$$ come just off the top of my head as pretty intentional, diverse, thoughtfully sequenced records (even if I don’t necessarily like them all hah)

  14. Man, I keep forgetting about the Earl album. It's good but hasn't stuck with me a ton outside of a few singular songs.

I need more time with it but the Black Thought Danger Mouse album I’d recommend to any fan of hip hop here, it’s really solid all the way through.

right I was just thinking that this is the most solid 'album project' I've heard in a minute. flows really well and feels... purposeful?

it's crazy that Kendrick and Earl both dropped projects this year and neither did anything for me. 2016 Rowan would be shocked to hear it, but both of those went in one ear out the other entirely

I've been waiting a bit to let Kendrick grow on me since it's so long and dense, but honestly I think it's my least favorite project from him

I unfortunately agree. It’s not “bad” per se, certainly thoughtful and deliberate, but I haven’t felt the desire to go back

  20. Echoing the Black Thought posts too, album is great

thats how i feel about a lot of stuff thats come out this year by artists i dig. kendrick, vince, future, denzel, earl, joey bada$$, kevin gates, pusha t, big krit, probably some others i cant think of have all put out meh to even great albums, they're just not as good as the rest of their work and lack the staying power that those artists best albums have. like i said, everything just feels pretty stagnant right now. griselda is an obvious exception and im sure theres some other shit i havent heard thats doing something interesting.

i also fully recognizing i am now pretty much outside of the target demographic for 'new' hip-hop and yeah not to sound like "old man yells at cloud" but i just dont like a lot of new shit ive been exposed to.

I think this is it for me as well. I feel like I haven’t truly “loved” a rap record since before the turn of the decade

  25. I revisited the Push album this week and really do think it's great, it's just so different in tone from the Griselda shit at the top of my year's list
