I think I would have hated it (and most mainstream audiences probably will) had I not seen High and Low first.
hahaha. this is really good, spike and denzel never fails. even after hearing all the praise for asap rocky, i was surprised that he had that performance in him. score didn't bother me but it did take a bit of getting used to. looks amazing, wish i didn't pass up seeing this in theaters. even seeing this fairly soon (like a month) after the original high and low didn't really deter from anything, which is nice
The person I just bought a tv from forgot to log out of their Apple TV account, so I’m gonna give this a watch before that goes away.
This starts a little rough, but man once it gets going it really shines. It feels more like some early Spike films like Mo’ Better Blues and Crooklyn. I’m gonna sit on it for a while, but my initial reaction is that damn, Spike is on a hell of a run in his later years.
The complaints about the score are understandable, but if you go through the filmography it’s pretty in line with what Terrance Blanchard did in a lot of Spike’s films. A little over the top in a way that feels to clash with the tone of the scene in many cases. I’m not saying this makes it good, but it feels like a feature of his films at this point.
With a day to sit on this, the flaws have become a lot more evident, but I still think it’s a very enjoyable Spike Lee joint. It also doesn’t help that I watched High and Low today, which is undeniably great.
I’m kinda taken aback by how positive the reception was in here. Some of the worst dialogue and writing I’ve heard in a long time. The studio and train scenes were cool. Hated the score also not necessarily his fault but the Progressive Auto Insurance guy took me out of every scene
