Also not corny if you know people who self harm in a similar way. It was really upsetting to watch/hear.

one thing i’m a little confused out re: the end

when annie starts chasing peter up to him closing himself in the attic and banging her head on the door, we’re supposed to believe she’s going to kill him, right?” so why, then, if she can just appear inside the room anyways to kill herself did she not just, idk, appear in the room anyways and kill peter? idk seemed very odd to me.

I get it and I think that's what A24 does with all their horror movies, with the most egregious being "It Comes At Night." They're all pretty tough movies to market, so you have to play up the praise ("Scariest Movie in Years!") without the context of it being a slow burn horror film that relies more on atmosphere than jump scares. They'll likely make their budget back and then some and do it again with whatever horror project is next.

  4. I usually leave the lights off when I walk around the house at night, and I've found myself glancing up at the corners of every room I walk in... you know... just to be sure.

I dunno I've been going through a lot of horror movies recently that I missed. Starting with the indie darlings The Witch and It Follows, but I also watched the Conjuring Friday, and I didn't think it was any scarier than this was. Like yeah, a few more jump scares overall, I figured the difference might be pace or length but that was also near 2 hours and did immensely well.

I think what is affecting the cinemascore more than anything was the very last scene since it's so immaculately weird.

    Assume It's A Bit

I think the thing here is about half to 3/4 of the movie is basically straight up a family drama about coping with loss. Yeah, there's always a sort of ominous undertone due to the framing of the scenes and the sound design/music, but a lot of the horror elements don't become the forefront until the last 30 minutes or so. So if people went in expecting a typical horror movie, they probably thought the slow burn was boring. If they were a bigger fan of the drama aspect, the ending sort of comes out of left field unless you're picking up on a lot of the more subtle foreshadowing elements.

Isn't Cinemascores schtick that they get your response as soon as you come out of the theater? I think the immediacy of it is why the audience seems so negative on cinemascore versus everywhere else.

Also explains The Witch's score (still need to see It Comes At Night)

  10. Someone in the Love thread got upset because I posted "Poor Randy" the night the seaon dropped in reference to the fact that the character is quite literally poor in every sense of the word and they took it as a spoiler lol

this movie was wild. I checked my phone a little over halfway in because I thought it was going to end without getting terribly spooky, and then the last 45 minutes were batshit. thoroughly impressed with every aspect, from the performances to the score and everything in between. I can't stop thinking about it. need to see it again in order to properly flesh out my thoughts

this was incredible and lived up to the hype in every conceivable way. me and my friends (all horror buffs) were legitimately shaken. I have so many thoughts but I'm just gonna let em marinate for a bit. Probably the best horror film of the 2010s though.

Except they poll people the Friday night of opening weekend, so a good portion (or majority?) of those seeing it are the ones excited to see the movie. I did have have an immediate positive reaction though I agree this type of movie stays with you longer in order to form an opinion

Rex Reed continues to be the worst and not only trashed the film but completely spoiled it at the start of the review while claiming not to. Can’t wait until he stops working.

Ha, I just read it. What a garbage review. The first 3 or 4 paragraphs summarize the first 75% of the movie, then he says he was begged not to reveal any surprises by the studio and acts like he didn't. How is this guy a paid professional? It was a completely one sided review that offered zero insight as to why he didn't like the movie at all except for it being not scary. Professional critics are supposed to offer more than that. Even if you didn't like the plot, I still think this move deserves major kudos in all technical categories. The score and sound was fantastic and the opening shot is one of the best opening shots I've seen in a long time.

I always like to read negative reviews as well as glowing ones when I care about a movie to see other insight, but the fact that his was garbage is no surprise. He’s a terrible critic and a terrible person.

this movie was absolutely insane, loved it.
I don't think I've been more surprised by a movie then when charlie died. like it actually took me out of the movie for a solid minute because I couldn't believe they just killed her off like that.
I've never been a huge horror movie fan because most are so hard for me to take seriously (and tbh I'm so susceptible to jump scares that I almost get pissed off at a movie that abuses them) but I thought this was truly exceptional. this was everything I think a horror movie should be.

I feel like I am having more dumb things creep me out in the past few days than I ever have before lmao! I woke up last night to my boyfriend trying to quietly get into bed after using the bathroom and basically panic rolled off my side of the bed. We are all doomed.

I liked this good movie! Lots of fun cinematography with the miniature sets that were as creepy as anything else in the movie.
