After walking out of this I was like "I don't want to see that again" since it was such a stressful experience, but now I'm just thinking about everything that happened and I feel like I have to see it again.

I was really glad I watched it a second time. It allowed me to focus on the cool technical aspects a little more without being overwhelmed by how stressed out I was. I will warn you, The Big Scene is somehow more stressful when you know it's coming.

Another question just popped in my head... if burning Charlie's sketch book first caused Annie's shirt to catch fire, why did she need her husband to burn it if she was offering to sacrifice herself to save Peter? But when she ends up burning it, the husband erupts in flames

I’m likely taking my mom this week because she’s been dying to see it, and I was chatting with the friend I saw it with this weekend and mentioned I might just step out during that part for a bit. He’s said he doesn’t want to see it again, but if he did he might do the same. We’ll see how it goes...

also for a split second I thought you were talking about Brooklyn 99 since you quoted me in that thread too haha. I was like the cool technical aspects? The big scene?

Paimon is a demon of mischief. I just took it as a blatant "I'm really just fucking with you now." kind of thing.

u know the incredible sound design of B99! ahahaha. (althought i will say the way they use the loud horn intro in their cold opens for comedy IS good sound design!)

It really cracks me up to see this mentioned so many times since Alex Wolff already played Gabriel Byrne’s son. Lol. I need to get on making that meme.....

I didn't even know that was Gabriel Byrne until afterwards when I saw the movie's imdb page

Well, until I just looked it up, I was expecting him to have a totally different ethnicity, haha.

I have to be honest, I haven't really gotten a good night's sleep since watching it. First time it's happened to me in a long time. Not really having bad dreams or anything, just waking up in the middle of the night filled with anxiety/dread, thinking too much on some of the imagery. I'm probably not helping myself by continually talking about the movie, but it was just so damn good.

Being totally honest, yes. And horror movies don't usually get me like that.

I slept horribly the first night after but it was less from fear and more from my brain going a mile a minute thinking about everything. Since then I still haven’t been comfortable walking around a dark house which is not the norm for me. It definitely has affected me more than I expected.

My stupid asshole cats spent all of last night taking turns jumping up into the windows when the blinds were closed...so every hour I got woken up by the blinds loudly slapping, convinced something was in the room with me. I was very unhappy.

i'm on vacation this week so I stayed up a lot later than I normally do after seeing it last night so that I was overly tired enough to just pass out. it's still all I can think about today though

A few general things first. I think the marketing campaign will lead to a word of mouth disaster based on it's current cinema score, and audience reviews. I think yelling about how it was the next exorcist, and the scariest movie in years, may have got butts in seats and lead to a pretty stellar opening weekend for what the movie actually is, but it's going to have a huge drop next weekend and there are people that will probably pass on seeing it on demand or TV later based on reviews of friends. I think it got a lot of modern day horror lovers to turn out, and from what I'm seeing, the majority are disappointed.

Having said all that, I loved it. It was absolutely beautifully shot (weird for such a dark movie) but the camera movements, the shot set ups, the acting, and the overall vibe, was all delightfully disturbing. However, it's not what I would consider scary by current horror movie standards and expectations (I think that's a good thing, so I'm not bashing it). A scary movie leaves me afraid of the dark afterwards, and afraid to turn on the lights when going to the bathroom, and at the movies while watching it, I'll be cowering and afraid to look. I never once got that feeling during this movie or afterwards. That superficial sense of scared though normally leaves after a few days and is gone until the next 'BOO' scary move.

Hereditary's themes have stuck with me, and I'm amazed that in this age, there were some absolutely genuine and horrifying surprises in the film, but I hesitate to call it scary I guess. Disturbing? Absolutely. Thought provoking? Absolutely. A great movie? For sure. But when I recommend it, I'll be careful who I recommend it to, and how I sell it. The only thing I know for sure is that I will tell people to go in with an open mind. Don't read anything about the plot (avoid the trailers if you haven't seen them) and watch it in a setting with people who appreciate slower movies. I heard a lot of stories of people laughing in the theaters and that would have ruined it for me. I know it got kind of out there, and required a bit of suspension of disbelief, or I guess just the ability to allow yourself to be immersed in something unfamiliar, but I really thought it was a great movie and I'm glad my theater was dead silent except for gasps at the obvious gasp worthy parts.

tbh the Paimon bits are probably the only thing this movie doesn't handle perfectly

  24. I’ve woken up around 2:30 both night since seeing the movie haven’t been able to fall back asleep for like 45 minutes because I’m thinking about the movie, definitely with you all on that.

Honestly I think what did it for me was really the head banging on the attic door shot. I know that probably seems like a random, kinda corny moment, but it’s so scary to me not only because of the imagery, but because Peter at that point is pretty freaked out by whatever he thinks is going on, but doesn’t truly know how alone he is.

I didn't think that was corny at all. I think how the film gives you the abrasive sounds first, then you see what's actually causing it, really has an effect.
