hey, can you guys help me settle this before i record a podcast- did the cake have nuts, or was it just that they used the same knife to cut the cake?

I swore looking at it that it was absolutely FULL of nuts, but that may have been my eyes playing tricks knowing that that was going to happen. It makes a lot more sense to have just been cross-contamination, especially since it didn't seem like they were there that long.

  4. Really loved this though, it’s basically exactly what I wanted. Pretty digestible plot with a lot of layers to pull back on, and creepy as hell. Feels like if this movie were to have come out a long time ago, a lot of these scenes/shots would be regarded as iconic today. The head banging on the attic door shot scared the shit out of me. Also the whole Joannie plot was super obvious but the movie was so grippping that it still felt like a wild ride to the reveal.

The only complaint I’ve got was that (and this isn’t really a spoiler, but) they relied wayyyy too often on the horror movie trope of “let’s show the character’s face looking at a spooky thing for a little too long and make the audience wonder what they’re looking at before revealing the spooky thing”

On a second viewing it indeed looked like it had a ton of nuts, your can see them in the separate slices pretty clearly

  6. It didn’t take me out of the film at all, but something I sorta realized afterward when reflecting on it — I don’t think I *fully* understood Charlie’s purpose in the the film. Was she groomed by the grandmother to pick up the witchcraft? Or was there some other significance to how close they were, and the creepy shit Charlie did after she passed? Outside of moving the plot forward, was there a point to Charie dying? Like, was she supposed to die, somehow? And at the end, Joannie said something about “correcting the female body”... did the demonic spirit accidentally inhabit the wrong body or something? Lol
I feel like there was something I missed that would make all of that click for me. If anyone’s got a good take on any of it I’d be appreciative!

    Assume It's A Bit

Pretty sure it's because Annie kept the grandma away from Peter when he was a baby, who the grandma wanted to be the true host for Paimon. However, Annie and the grandma reconnected around the time Charlie was born, so the grandma used Charlie as a temporary host for Paimon until they had the opportunity to get Paimon into Peter. I'm assuming they had to just break him mentally so he couldn't resist the possession or something like that.

The prevailing theory at this point is that Charlie was inhabited by Paimon ever since infancy. It's mentioned that the grandmother wanted to be close to Peter but Annie kept him away, and then basically gave her to her when she was born, even including nursing (blech). All of her weird habits like making the dolls and drawing the family in pain follow the "real" Paimon's depiction as knowing of art and worldly things and the future. If she was just a normal kid that influence wouldn't have been present. I even read one theory that when they do the seance and she takes over Annie is the only time in the film we ever hear the real Charlie without Paimon's influence, which I kind of love. The only issue I have with this theory is I'm not sure how the light plays into it since we saw her following it outside herself in the present. I'll have to pay closer attention next time.

Yes, exactly. And it even started earlier with Annie's brother, who resisted being taken over. That's possibly where the idea came to make sure that Peter was at his most vulnerable. I also assume the deaths are another layer to making sure the ritual succeeds, possibly in the previous generation his father's death was part of it? That's just speculation though. It also makes more sense for her to eat a cake stuffed with nuts if instead of being an innocent child who would know better than to eat that she is fully aware that she is going to die to get into the correct body.

Saw it again last night. I don't know why, it was worse the second time because I knew what was coming.

I can see why it’s compared to classics. It has that vibe. Idk. Maybe I just have become desensitized to horror movies and was expecting more.
I thought there was gonna be some crazy twist and I really had no information going into it so I was considering all sorts of possibilities (ie: it all being a manifestation of Annie’s mental illness, reincarnation of some sort, among other things)

Saw it this afternoon (really really enjoyed it) and at least few people were gasping in the audience before I realized what they were seeing. Also a few people towards the end would make the clicking sound when the movie was near silent.

Not seen this yet (though hopefully I will within the next week) but it is great to see this doing well at the Box Office in America but also disheartening to see it get a D+ on CinemaScore whereas a nearly universally panned horror film like Truth or Dare gets like a B-.

Also as the film was ending as we’re learning the cult is using Peter’s body to house the Paimon, I instantly remembered the scene in the beginning where Annie found the note from her mom that “the benefits will outweigh their sacrifices,” meaning the grandma was sacrificing her family for her deity all along”

I may or may not have screamed YES and turned from sheer terror to total joy. And so much to it thematically. Just perfect.

Is it explained why decapitations (the bird, Charlie, Grandma's corpse, Annie) are a running theme in this?

i truly adored this and am already planning round two, but i can't get past the handling of Peter getting high at a party, driving so recklessly with Charlie in tow that he decapitates her, coming home while leaving the head in the road and the body in the backseat and just going to sleep for someone else to find and deal with. i get it was an accident and traumatic for him but it seems like the father didn't hold it against him at all lol.

I chalked it up to him being in a continued state of shock and unable to process what just happened. And I got the feeling when he laid down in his bed he was awake (and still in shock) throughout the night. As for the dad, I felt like Peter experienced a bunch of trauma in his life, notably his sleepwalking mom pouring paint thinner on him and almost lighting him on fire, and if he made Peter feel guilty for accidentally killing his sister wouldn't do any good at that point

Man I thought I was going crazy during that scene and when she moves a god damn shiver just coarsed through my whole body.

This did 2 things that freak me the fuck out in movies: someone waking up to someone standing in the corner of their room staring at them and having a figure in the background that moves silently
