I put on Lift Your Existence the other week and it’s still just as incredible as when it first came out. Big fan.
New You Anthem was solid but Constant Tension is where it’s at for me. Very stoked for this record now!
Woah I got unsubscribed from this thread without realizing and missed these singles!! All in on all of them. Does Frank sing like he does on his feature elsewhere?
First song released was the best one imo. Not a bad album, but not too much standing out on first listen
Immediately gave it a listen this morning. It was definitely Doug, which is great to hear. Need to give it a few more listens to digest it, but nothing yet stuck out. I found myself thinking it wasn't nearly as catchy as the newest Sleeping album.
This is definitely not a record that will pull someone in at first listen, I can feel it as well but the rawness and the passion behind the songs can be heard right away. Some songs could have benefited from shorter playtimes due to the repetitiveness of the choruses or some sections but nevertheless it is still a strong rock record and I am glad Doug still makes music.
well said. I just gave it a second listen from start to back and would agree with all this. Nothing amazing that Im hitting rewind on immediately, but dig the record.
Really liked this on my first listen, the guitar work impresses me at times and makes me wonder how much Doug contributed to The Sleeping's instrumentals in the past. Giving it a second one later
The last song 'EMPTINESS: A SIDE EFFECT' is so good by the way. It is giving me Night Verses vibes as well.
A lot of this album actually gives me Night Verses vibes. But maybe that's because I revisited that EP this weekend. That first Night Verses EP holds up so well still. The Held. album was grown on me after 5 or 6 listens. I still enjoy the Sleeping and NV more though. All in all, Douglass never disappoints.
Some parts give me The Sleeping (What It Takes era) vibes a well. Guess all this means Douglas should record more music. Grateful he's given it another shot after the long break he had following his departure from Night Verses. I'll have to revisit The Sleeping's latest btw
Album review: Held. – GREY | Kerrang! Interesting review lol. Don't think I ever considered his voice an acquired taste. Even when I first started getting into this genre and searching for new bands, The Sleeping were pretty immediate. But I know everyone has different tastes.
Yeah Doug has always been pretty immediate from an enjoyment standpoint. He's not like the helium singers of the rise of post-hardcore or the yell/singing of late 2010s/early 2020s emo.
Pretty solid album. I prefer the latest The Sleeping album but I'm really digging Constant Tension and Grey.
I think their latest album is some of their best work, it sounds just like them but more mature and they add a little bit of interesting elements they've fully done before. I saw them play those songs live and it was incredible.
