This feels a lot like a midpoint between the two teenage wrists albums to me. Much better than their new singles too
“Something Real” really nails the whole Swervedriver/Catherine Wheel influence that so many bands are trying to pull off, but this whole record rules
I remember sitting with this album on my phone thinking to myself "They've got to deliver a heater to open this thing" and boy did they deliver.
This is excellent. I get WGTB vibes at the end of Be My Blues, I wonder if that was an influence at all. Edit: From that interview posted earlier... One of the most compelling songs on the album is the bare alternative metal/post-grunge inspired single “Be My Blues.” Originally written for Teenage Wrist’s Chrome Neon Jesus sometime between 2017 and 2018, it was initially heavily inspired by Silverchair’s theatrical Neon Ballroom and would go through a couple of transformations before making its way onto Pyrophonics. “I was listening to Vein.fm and they had just released that B-sides remix album (Old Data in a New Machine Vol. 1) and they put out ’20 seconds : 20 hours’ and I was like, oh my god, I absolutely love this. This is so sick,” Mohager enthusiastically shares. After tracing Vein.fm’s inspiration back to Deftones’ B-Sides and Rarities, he felt inspired to collaborate with Gallagher once again to rework the song for Heavenward’s EP. When it didn’t make the cut yet again, it was modified one more time with Zach Tuch for the album. “He completely dissected the song and I was having so much anxiety about it. If it weren’t for Zach, it would not exist. He really helped bring out the ideas and bring in more trip hop elements, letting the first chorus not be so cliche, and would just switch things up a little bit adding some cool elements,” he continues. After they had finished the song, Mohager pitched the idea of incorporating a distraught voicemail ripped from Youtube at the end of it. When they couldn’t get the audio cleared from the original uploader, the voicemail was removed from the song. However, Mohager was determined and after writing up a script for his wife Isabella, he recorded her voice acting as if she were in distress in one take and sent it off to Tuch who would work it into the song as it appears on the album. “She nailed it and Zach did some chopping here and there and effected the fuck out of it and now I can say that my wife is on a record of mine. She sounds crazy, and it’s awesome,” says Mohager. Yeah probably lol
What is WGTB? I literally was about to comment my take on the end of Be My Blues but saved myself from a double post. I'm feeling it's on the edge of Thrice/Thursday/Armor For Sleep. Really like the heavier take on the ending.
When Girls Telephone Boys by Deftones Starts with a voicemail from a female before launching into a heavy discordant wall of sound.
Definitely top five for sure. It’s hitting all the right spots for me. I think my one critique is the ending is a little weak to me. The last song doesn’t conclude the album well imo and every time I listen to it I expect another song to kick in. Just a minor nitpick for an otherwise perfect album though.
What about Be My Blues as the closer? I agree "Fly" has a better feel for a closer but I wonder how it'd sound if the album ended abruptly on a manic voicemail
Be My Blues or Fly could work as closers better. I’d even take a 45-60 second instrumental to round out the end of Choke for a better closing to it. Im also a sucker for voicemails in songs so Be My Blues is my favorite song on the album for that reason haha
"Planned Human Combustion" is pretty easily my highlight on this, whoa. I'm hearing some Third Eye Blind and really liking it.
Jarring is a great word for it. I'd love for them to explore that harsher side on future efforts because it works really well.
