Anyone have experience with cheap, elastic knee braces? I hurt my knee almost 2 months ago and it still hurts if I move it wrong. It's healed to some degree, in that it takes a bit more walking to feel the pain, but it's not completely better yet. I can't go to a doctor for another month, so I picked up a cheap brace to help me walk until then.

The internet tells me it's hit or miss so I'm not feeling very optimistic about it haha.

I tore my ACL and MCL so I had the expensive ones. In college sometimes I would just wrap it up really tight in an ace bandage and then put a cheaper one with the rubber that goes in a circle around the knee cap and it felt pretty stable.

Yeah the few people I've talked to have said it's better than nothing. My knees face inward a bit so I'm worried about tearing something in the future. I feel like the braces are best for straight knees haha. You run, too, so do you have any problems now? Has it healed completely?

I had two knee surgeries, one in my junior year in hs and then one when I was about 19-20. I don't wear one when I run. It's healed but I still wear a brace whenever I play any sports where I'm cutting left and right. Mainly bc I'm scared of tearing it again even though my surgeon says its like a bionic knee and better than my other one.

Jesus. Did the first surgery have anything to do with the second injury or was it coincidental?

I had it done right before this new technology came out which my sister tore hers too (weird I know) and she was walking that same day of the surgery. I was in the hospital for about 3 days, 3 months crutches, 5 months pt. They used to go in and shave the back of your hamstring and use that hamstring piece to make the new ACL and MCL and they attached it with a shit ton of metal. So my surgeon told me that people don't always have a 2nd surgery but sometimes the screws and shit start jiggling around and need to be removed. So of course that happened to me and even though I still have a bunch in there they took one of the screws that was jiggling out and it's been great ever since. No problems at all. It's nuts

Man that's a lot of recovery time. Good to hear it's solid now.

As usual, I'm thinking way too far ahead but hopefully surgery isn't in the cards. It's nice to hear about a good outcome, though.

Every time I can't get motivated to exercise I listen to Work Bitch on repeat until I get off my butt. I wonder how many times I've played it on spotify lol it has to be hundreds because sometimes it takes like half an hour for me to finally do it. I love the feeling of exercising after I do it, it's just getting me to do it.

Edit ok I did it now I'm lying on the floor dying

This has been a really underwhelming week for me. Seriously lacking motivation and I'll probably only end up losing a pound

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

think of all the people that didn't do jack this week and didn't lose weight and / or gained weight. your "just a pound lost" puts them to shame.

I gained 8... granted, it was water weight due to having my gallbladder out yesterday, but still! Any progress is good progress. You are moving in the right direction, and that's nothing to scoff at. Stalls will happen in any weight loss journey, large or small. Don't beat yourself up when your body slows down to compensate for all of the hard work you're putting in. :)

  13. @muttley what kind of knee pain is it (like where on the knee and when/what activities cause the pain) and have you been icing it?

I'm not sure exactly. The pain feels pretty centered, not off to a certain side. If I have to walk a mile or so, especially over varied terrain, or uphill/up stairs, it'll start to hurt. Sometimes it'll be a little sore after driving because of the way I sit. I never know how to rest my leg/foot without putting strain on my knee. It seems like it isn't aligned when it bends.

You might need to lay off the physical exertion. Sometimes they just need time to heal. Did you twist it or what did you do?

I stretched wrong and went hiking. I felt pain in my thigh and kept going instead of turning around. I must have been walking differently to compensate, which put stress on my knee.

It's been 2 months since it happened. I walked around on sidewalks about a month ago and it hurt again. I haven't been physically active at all besides that, and walking around the house. Sometimes I get a mild sting just lying in bed. It's like there's no way to relax it.

That's why I'm concerned. I've never had an injury linger for this long. I start work on Monday and I'll be on my feet all day - that's gonna be a problem haha.

Do you have access to a pool anywhere? I'd recommend swimming some if possible.

I twisted my ankle pretty bad running the other day and after a few days of swimming, I was good as new.

Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.

Does anyone deadlift regularly? If so, do you just stick to the conventional stance/grip or do you also do other variations like deficit, sumo, etc.?

There is a pool nearby but I've never been much of a swimmer :O

I've had so many close calls with ankles. That's a special kind of jolt haha.

  21. Hmmm... Maybe you have petellar femoral syndrome? Like what other have said, non weight bearing exercise like swimming. My other thought was IT band friction syndrome which I had before and my pain was on the outside of the knee and was really painful to where I couldn't bend my knee, but it doesn't exactly sound like that from what you described. If you want you can go to the doctor since you're starting a new job as you mentioned.

Yeah I'm waiting to see how the insurance is. I saw something online that sounded like a good description and it might have been one that you mentioned. I'm thinking a doctor, or whoever they refer me to, would be best. Get it taken care of once and for all.

I usually stick my iPod/cellphone in my sports bra when I'm exceeding. I can't believe they are still working after LL of the sweat. I think I'm gonna get a fannypack.
