Also GUYS I'm so dumb I was running on the treadmill yesterday and only had 2 minutes left and closed my eyes cause idk I do that when I'm trying to not focus on the fact that I'm running cause it sucks, and I like stopped running straight and almost fell off!!! I like ran off the side of the treadmill and got one foot down on the ground and luckily didn't fall over and was able to stabilize myself. It wasn't even like oh no I'm so weak I can't keep up and I fell. I like... just ran right off the treadmill idek. And since I had my eyes closed I was like wait wtf and was so confused for a split second before I realized what I did. Anyway never doing that again!!
@Kiana I ran across these this morning and thought you might be interested (obviously beware the hyperbole in the clickbait headline of the first one, but still good tips): 3 Simple Tricks to Improve Running Form (And Have the Best Run Ever) 8 Tips for Proper Running Form
So I went to the urgent care yesterday to get a x-ray on a sprained finger (negative!) and as I was walking out of the door (quite literally) the PA just casually says to me: "Has anyone ever told you that you have a low heart rate?" and I was like "uhhh, no?" She said 'It's likely because you are an athlete, and it's not too concerning, but something to keep an eye on." I never monitor my heart rate or even look at it, but now I've been checking on my Apple Watch constantly since she's said that. My resting rate today is at 48. She said as long as I don't have chest pain or dizziness, I should be fine. She also said she looked back at all my vitals since April of 2020 and said it's decreased every time. Kind of blew my mind she just tossed that bomb at me casually as I was leaving her office. My wife, of course, was like freaking out about my heart rate as hers is much, much, much higher than mine. Again, this is something that I've never once paid any amount of attention to.
48 is ok for someone who works out a lot and is on the younger side. It’s a little jarring if you don’t check your heart rate often. As long as you aren’t symptomatic and don’t have some sort of heart block. I’m an NP and we get this concern all the time.
I didn’t know what thread I was in for a second and thought you were quoting a tom segura story lol. His doctor had said his heart rate was so low he was either an Olympic athlete or a cocaine addict…and he’s clearly not an athlete. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry TOO much if you don’t have any negative symptoms like your doctor said. Some people are outliers
When I'm in my best shape, I've been as low as 46 or 47, that can be normal with a good fitness level for sure
I get an annual physical every single fall, and not once has my main doctor mentioned it. Last time I saw him in September, he told me I was a "poster boy for good health." I for sure will mention this to him though, because now that she mentioned it, and now that I keep checking, I'm definitely pretty low (but feel fine and exercise every day).
Can intake of more protein cause shortness of breath? Been working out at a gym and taking one protein shake a day with some protein bars thrown in here and there. Been having a hard time taking deep breaths throughout the day, mostly in the afternoons. Seeing a doc for it soon but wondering if anyone had any exp with it?
It's so ridic how much emphasis doctors put on your weight when you have a complaint. I randomly just remembered today how a while back I went to my doctor for complaint about migraines and she attributed it to me gaining weight and encouraged me to lose weight to help reduce them. Even tho I told her they started and were at their worst before I gained the weight so how would my weight gain be responsible? But despite this she seemed focused on it being weight related and told me to go on keto or low carb diet. I have since lost a large portion of the weight I gained and guess who still gets migraines lol? And that's like a way less severe issue than what many overweight ppl get ignored by their doctor because the doctor assumes it has to be weight related and won't look at other possible causes.
If my knowledge is correct, the migraines are more related to what you are actually eating vs. weight gain.
I just ended up tracking them on my own and realized they're related to when I'm on my period, for the most part. It was just so frustrating feeling like I wasn't being listened to and my weight was an easy thing to blame
Ehh maybe lessen it a bit and see if it gets better, I know when I’m busy I’ll sometimes have two shakes a day and get tired/shortness of breath. But there’s days I’ll just make one after my workout and I’m usually fine.
This is v obvious but omg stretching is so important. I always knew that but when i was younger, even up until the last few years, I never rly did it and never had a noticeable negative consequence (tho it wasn't good for me to neglect it, obv). Now if i don't stretch I swear I'm just out of commission for the next few days. My muscles get so stiff and painful. Stretching for even just 5 minutes makes such a difference in my recovery.
Yeah, stretching is very key, especially the older you get. I *should* stretch more, but I really only stretch right before exercising and if I'm sore the next day. I'm also the least flexible person you'll ever meet.
I have the opposite problem, my heart rate is just naturally high and I've been to the doc and cardiologist for it the last few months. Some of it is anxiety which I'm on meds for now, but when I run I can hit 190-200bpm no problem. Weightlifting I can hit 160 when lifting heavy. My resting is usually around 60-70ish though. Mine told me as long as I'm feeling good and not passing out or having chest pains to just keep an eye on it.
My resting rate today is 49, my current is 71 and earlier I played 5 on 5, full-court basketball for 82 minutes and my average heart rate was 132 during that time. I'm not gonna worry about it, I just still think it's kind of funny the PA threw it at me as I was literally walking out the door, yet my primary physician who I see once a year has never mentioned it. My next physical is in September, so I'll make mention of her comments, but unless I feel weird or experience chest pains, just gonna ride it out with this lazy heart rate, haha.
I only stretch on my days off from the gym. Sometimes I'll use a foam roller if I'm very sore but usually just warming up is enough that I'm not too sore the next day.
Have battle ropes in my new gym, man that is my shit good interval workout for me to keep the heart rate up
I only stretch after working out - arms, legs, and back - as part of my cool down and it's a huge benefit to me, I'm so tight and have pains in my legs if I don't. I have a warm-up routine for pre-workout most days and only stretch before working out if I'm extra tight/sore from something the day before or if I'm planning an extra-long run.
