    just one of those ghosts

The AWKIF singles and eventually the album was paradigm shifting for me. The melodies, the guitar playing, the energy. As a sixteen year old, it was everything.

Missing that Jimmy Eat World tour is one of my major music regrets. The first time I saw them was with fun and Relient K opening.

Discovered them when they played Give It A Name Festival in 2006, and haven't looked back since.

Same date of that festival also had 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out' era P!ATD, 'Define The Great Line' era Underoath, Atreyu had just put out 'A Deathgrip on Yesterday', and My Chemical Romance headlined and were about to start working on 'The Black Parade'. What a time.

the second verse is (mostly) a direct quote from Robin Williams's character

  8. The Bloodhound Gang thing takes me right out of the song every time unfortunately, otherwise I like that song quite a bit

We reach for the longest shadow

Total miss for me, doesn’t really change how I feel about the album as a whole though. Easy to skip on an album with this many tracks.

    “Discovery Channel” good.

Maybe the worst on the album? Idk, can’t think of a song offhand that I definitively like less. But, to whatever extent that’s perhaps true, it’s only because one of the songs probably needs to me. It’s still good.

i like every song on the album for different reasons, but if i had to choose one that stands out the least to me, i'm going with Zissou. it's not bad, but the others are just stronger for me

  14. The only one I actually dislike is Brotherly Hate. Just find the melodies in that one really unpleasant

    forbidden chalice.

i really like Discovery Channel, it's one of my favorites. I think the lyrics of the chorus work well, even if it's a sample of a humoristic song. I interpret the lines as an apathetic, monotonous routine, a la Ordinary by Copeland, where the defunction of a relationship noted in the first verse ("teeth gnash when we kiss" / "don't you miss when I used to smile") is repeated day after day, as hinted in the bridge ("I can't heal, you keep ripping me open"). It provides a really cool contrast to the rest of the song. Sometimes, I view the chorus as a "fine, let's get it over with" style groan, and other times, I see it as a "the only time we click as a couple is when we are intimate". I'm really enamored by it because it's an otherwise playful line backed by a very detached and defeated cadence. It makes that section feel very ambiguous and interesting to me in a way I'm really intrigued by.

discovery channel is my favourite on the album but that second verse in parachute is one of the best things i've heard in a while so it's a tie i guess.

i see the chorus as fighting like animals instead of being intimate.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

love Brotherly Hate, she should go borderline screaming vox more often

  20. It reminds me of like… Twenty One Pilots or something. Just not my thing at all. But this album also includes many of the best songs across her entire career so it’s not much to complain about!

The thing is, 21 Pilots sucks, and “Brotherly Hate” rules.

21 Pilots’ is a mixed bag for me. When they lean into the hip hop stuff it’s not my favorite but when they lean into the 2000s alt rock influence like on “Drum Show” and “Next Semester”, that’s when they really shine.

Not the right thread but just felt like sharing that lol

I don't love the "brotherly love brotherly hate don't it sometimes feel like the same thing" melody but the rest of the song makes up for it. I like Discovery Channel but I only really listen on full album plays, can't say I've reached for it too often.
