Hayley talked a little about the upcoming Paramore album on her podcast:

We started working on new material as a band over the last year and a half – you know, the three of us, Zac, Taylor and I – and I just want to say it, I don’t even feel like it gives away very much…Bloc Party, from day one, was the number one reference because, it was like, there was such an urgency to their sound that was different from the fast punk or the pop punk or the loud wall-of-sound emo bands that were happening in the early 2000s. They had their own thing and it was so unique and so dynamic and it really stuck with us and I’m really really thankful for this band. I’m so thankful that they’re back and playing shows. They’re putting out great songs and it just makes me feel even more excited to get back out into the world and maybe cross paths with a band that has been a huge part of our story since day one.

If Paramore want to release an album sonically inspired by Helicopter, Hunting for Witches et al., I say absolutely go for it,

Damn, what an influence for this next era. I love Silent Alarm. Bloc Party’s new album is really good too.

Can’t wait to hear what Paramore cooked up. I know their album was a big hit amongst the community here and fans in general. But I missed the “urgency” like she describes in the interview. Hoping that’s more prevalent on this new album.

    Better than you, sorry

There are levels to this. Some bands can maintain at the highest level for a few albums. Bloc party are one of those bands. Their first 3 albums were concise yet diverse with fluidity--and Four was still very good. Not many bands can do that, especially not as long as Bloc did it. Paramore (imo) has yet to release such a solid album as some of their predecessors or I guess older contemporaries, but they definitely have some bangers. If they can release an album where every song slams then I’ll be damned. But there are levels to this and bloc party were at another level. But Bloc Party released their own brand/style of music. Its been replicated since, most recently by travis barkers people, Kenny Hoopla, but Paramore...Levels to this.

Whatever hahh, they did help establish a new sound at the time, so that's why they're the ones mentioned as an influence, what's the point trying to put any shade on a band not being at the same level (which besides the specific cultural impact is still pretty subjective). Didn't see anything like that when Citizen literally started putting out songs sounding like BP etc.

  13. I would personally argue that very few artists from this larger “scene” have released albums as good as Paramore’s s/t

I know that there are levels to this, but I’d argue Paramore is way more influential than Bloc Party. Taste is obviously a matter of opinion, but Paramore has had a lot more reach inside and outside of the scene than Bloc Party did at their peak well over a decade ago.

  15. That and Bloc Party has had their ups and downs while Paramore has remained consistently great over the years, despite the line-up troubles and stylistic changes.

But we all love a hot take don't we?

I think the words influential and successful are being implied as similar in this thread and thats just not that the case. I've seen people refer to something as influential when it has been seen as a bit of a commercial failure but has a larger cultural impact. I am assuming people are saying Paramore is influential to like, Billie Eilish and Willow, etc.?

I don't think it's a coincidence 15 years on from Misery Business and Riot!, a whole wave of female fronted pop-punk bands are continuing to appear with regularity.

Also think many bands, irrespective of the gender of their singers, have taken note of how Paramore have carefully developed and stretched their sound.

I hate it when radio stations call it a "podcast" when it's basically just a show that's exclusively available on their platform.

Bonkers if you think Paramore is a new influence to only a handful of artists, and I'm pretty sure the words influential and successful are not being implied as similar here, they just go hand in hand - for both of those bands.

Strange to assume that a female artist's influence can only be found in other women's (let's say somehow similar) music too, but even with that logic there were still times where you couldn't listen to a female-fronted pop punk band without getting Paramore comparisons. Let alone the fact that the band was definitely just significant to lots of other artists.

Establishing a sound or creating a genre on the other hand is something else, sure, but it's never just one band that does that alone. Naming a few influences you have is also usually marketing etc., I wouldn't give it that much of a thought - it's weird someone would take it as an invitation to compare "levels" of the bands haha, comes off as a bit condescending.

I know it’s gonna be seen as a hot take but IMO Bloc Party > Paramore. Both in sound/style and influence. I have found myself returning to BP way more than P over the years. All We Know is Falling is my favorite of P by a long shot, too. I’m very excited to see what P sounds like with Silent Alarm as an influence. I also don’t see a real response to my question or that my question wasn’t clear, so who would be considered influenced by P? I really am not trying to be condescending

I am never amazed at how a simple question gets a passive aggressive response, thanks.

  25. Jason was alluding to Olivia Rodrigo, but here are more artists who have professed their love for them publicly: Willow Smith, Lil Uzi Vert, Snail Mail, Princess Nokia, PVRIS. That's a diverse range of musicians right there, and there must be so many more as sometimes the influence is blatant. Paramore are easily one of the most influential bands of their generation.
