Didn't see a topic for them so I figured this would be nice to have for their first album in 11 years, super pumped to dig into it
this album is pretty great. i wouldnt say it tops either wolf king or coward as a full project but it is loaded with killer songs that meet that standard and has its own identity within their catalog gnasher is crazy lol
Pretty much my exact thoughts, really great especially after 11 years between albums. Definitely wish it sounded a bit more raw and that Jimmy came back too but alas
I am happy with this release gives me Attack Of The Wolf King vibes but somehow darker even. My gripe would be that it’s a little too dark for my current mood. I would have probably vibed more with a Pressure The Hinges sound, but beggars can’t be choosers. I’m just happy to have music from them after so long. And this is a first impression too, so that takes no account of how it will grow on me on repeat listens.
i would have loved some jimmy but i accept the trade off that this probably stephens best vocal performance dude sounds incredible on this
Yea, I was browsing the metalcore subreddit page for album discussion for this out of curiosity and someone was like "Stephen's screams are a bit weak", like what where???
yeah thats an incomprehensible take to me lol the more melodic stuff is winning me over a lot the more i jam it too, oblivion and grave are esp big winners there
jamming attack of the wolf king again and i gotta shoutout "white as snow" for being my favorite deftones song that deftones didn't write rest of the album demolishes too
Yea Attack of the Wolf King is when I first started listening to them, still probably my fav from them too
i think it clears up a lot of the mud while also adding a lot of beef, i used to think it sounded kinda flat before. the guitar tone is pretty different
Question for the topic. Who did clean vocals on Attack Of The Wolf King? I’ve always wondered because it sounds like a higher register than Brennan and when you look at their Wiki it lists Brennan as a “former member” for this album. Just curious because I’ve always preferred the clean vocals on Attack of The Wolf King. I like Brennan’s cleans too but I feel like somebody else was on duty for that album. It also sounds like he’s in the beginning of the song Grave off of Dissenter. And I know they were sharing duties for Dreamer. I feel like this should be obvious, but I have no clue.
Wow Stephen’s cleans are really good. I like when him and Brennan share duties like on Dreamer. Good stuff.
Hm, this isn’t doing much for me. Not like I’m the biggest metalcore consumer these days. But, I really love what Poppy’s been up to, so I can still be open to something cool. Also, this band was my favorite of this scene at my peak of engagement with it, and that Coward reunion album was maybe arguably their best? My first impression right now is that this feels kinda bland. Not bad, but not something I’d ever go to over any of my nostalgic favs. Which, maybe is an unfair bar, but again, Coward cleared it (I was already not an active consumer of these bands by then).
Adrift is really a stand out track for me. I wanna echo that this album is probably Stephen’s best vocal performance and that this album is growing on me the more I listen to it. Grave, Shallows, and Liminal are all also honorable mentions on a great album. I adore that Silent Planet feature too. Garrett Russell sounds perfectly in place in a HTD track.
Recently had guitarist Dave Krysl on my podcast and that chat went live today. We dive into the album a bit more, and how the song 'Adrift' in particular is quite personal to him as he contributed to its lyrics.
