yeah some people were saying it was too harsh, but I thought everything she said was very fair and a lot more well thought out than a lot of rock critics who have been chomping at the bit to fawn over this thing
Definitely. I thoroughly enjoy this album, but I think it's possible to enjoy something while still looking at its flaws objectively.
100%. I think most of the stuff around this album that bugs me is just people who act like this is the first worthwhile music he's done in his career just because he made more of what is ostensibly a "rock" album. That post-boy band "serious music" narrative is just so boring to me, and doesn't need to be rehashed more than I already just did lol
Yeah definitely. 1D had legitimately great songs, and it's pretty funny when people write off ALL of them and praise this just because of the context of it being a boy band vs. solo artist.
I love this write up. Really fair criticisms that aren't intended to follow the critical trends of praising him for a 'serious album' or being eager to tear him down for his boy band past. Also love how it focuses on Bhasker as the key to the album's sound, because I feel the same way. Almost every conversation i've had about this album in the last few days ends with some sort of discussion on Baskher, fun., and Grand Romantic. Interesting to add Mark Ronson / Bruno Mars to that discussion.
Yeah, I don't really dig this album. The production is fantastic and I see what he's going for, but it's not quite up my alley.
Yoooo my girlfriend and I had the same thoughts. I can't quite pick out which song, I'm thinking New Pollution
I said it in another thread, but the way he sings on this album really just makes me think of Sameer from Young the Giant, so much at times that it really distracts me
I'm in too deep. Watching him host James Cordon's show and I'm living. The way he says "Taco Bell" is fascinating
