I'm gonna peace out of this thread early, but all I can say is that if this is the kind of posting this thread attracts, maybe it should be burnt to the ground.
My wife was going to buy this game because she's a huge Harry Potter fan and it was a big part of her childhood. But after she read some articles and what not, she decided against it. So yes, people's minds can change and @sophos34 and others should keep posting trying to convince people to not purchase it.
I am sincerely sorry about that. I certainly didn't, nor still do I guess, realize the impact her comments have had. I assumed it was strictly online, widely condemned, and had no spillover into people's behaviors in real life (IE - no one is committing transphobic acts because of JK Rowling, or no one changed their view point because of her opinions). I however, cannot, and probably will not, understand the pain of an artist I looked up to, denouncing my lifestyle and that's probably the biggest part of all this that I missed. I genuinely (and maybe incorrectly), am giving a lot of people the benefit of the doubt in thinking they will purchase this game, assuming that the worst she did was offend some people online. (That was me, a few posts back I said I was interested in playing it and hearing about it). Because of that, I find it hard to fully engage and agree with your thoughts that they are responsible for the worst possible outcome because of that. I can't condemn that they lack critical thinking, morals, or are poor allies when it comes to things that more advertently affect trans people (like voting, standing up for people in public when victims of abuse etc).
two separate situations being completely different is not what hypocrisy is. elon musk didn’t invent twitter and it’s literally hemorrhaging money right now. if I was shelling out money for twitter blue sure maybe you’d have a point but I’m not when the game was announced I was not against buying and playing the game. talking to people about how harmful JK Rowling has been and then seeing her vile hatred for trans people first hand when I started paying attention to her posts I realized I just would never be okay with it. Pirating and secondhand copies are one thing but I also learned through talking to people that it’s less about the money (although knowing that her money largely goes to anti trans causes doesn’t help) but the social acceptance of her views implicitly by allowing her a platform and to profit from it
Just a reminder that the existence of selective outrage and hypocrisy (which I don’t really think has actively happened here, because apples and oranges, but that’s besides the point) does not mean your behaviour isn’t a justified target of said outrage. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t rethink your behaviour concerning the particular issue people may or may not be selectively outraged about.
From a design perspective I think it does a good job waiting to "unleash" the world on you until you get a decent understanding of mechanics.
I played a bit of at my friends and it ran surprisingly well. The art/production design is so immersive. It looks exactly like the film and the combat is smooth. I’m don’t plan on buying the game anytime soon though so I’ll just play it when i’m at my friend’s place, but if I do buy it, it won’t be until the switch version and IF the game runs well on the switch. Which is a big IF.
PC seems to be having some problems, so tbh I'm not sure what a switch port will look like : ( Getting constant 60fps on PS5 though.
Luckily they said the switch version will be a port of the PS4/Xbox One build so hopefully that will help it run better on switch
I think if they were waiting to greenlight a sequel for year 6, they aren't anymore. Huge numbers and critic consensus.
Really makes me wonder what other franchises could make a similar transition. Huge franchise with large fanbase and hasn’t ever had a modern well received AAA video game. I could see them trying a Game Of Thrones game.
This game was also green lit before the HP franchise was controversial. I could see the licensing negotiations with JK being a nightmare on both sides for a sequel. They likely want to keep her involvement minimal and she could ask for direct creative involvement.
I want a middle earth game made similar to hogwarts legacy. Obviously not a school, but open world where your characters can traverse across all of middle earth.
I can't imagine they won't go for a sequel. People will play it regardless of JK getting more involved or not. I read in the next year is when Dumbledore first gets to Hogwarts.
Sure but like, you could previously at least make the case that you had started the development before JK really starting getting shitty and didn't want to lose all that money if they go forward with a sequel really hits the message home that the developers of the game don't give a shit about human rights
I mean, Avalanche are a subsidiary of Warner Bros who literally own the IP and continue to profit from it in an immeasurable number of ways on a daily basis. Everything from merchandising, to a new wizarding world land being developed at the next universal theme park, to broadway, and the list goes on and on. The IP isn’t going anywhere and a sequel will 100% happen. Corporations don’t care at all
That’s a completely fair point, I just personally think this really needs to be on the publishers more than anyone else.
