Really enjoyed this even if it’s a little long. Found it very sweet and funny. it kinda was Sandler’s Matrix Resurrections
The flashbacks are totally unnecessary, but I feel like they had to throw them in there because they were like “Well, we’re not always gonna have the rights to the original.”
Dumb as hell but funny enough for me to enjoy myself. Ugly as hell, all the outrageous cgi golf stuff at the end sucked shit.
Sandler films range from 1 star to 5 stars and everything in between. Overall I think he has a much better track record than a lot of people give him credit for.
Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell are probably the closest comparison to Sandler but it is hard to compare them because they gradually dropped off and started making less films while Sandler has been a machine.
In the end, I think the Netflix deal really helped him find his footing for this later part of his career. The early stuff, like Ridiculous 6 and Sandy Wexler, is hot garbage. But he’s been doing a mixture of drama, standup and comedy and it’s becoming increasingly more sincere and less angry/horny. Like, HG2 is a pretty clean movie, content wise.
I prefer quite a few Sandler comedies to Anchorman but that's just subjective. I just meant that while Carrey is a fair comparison because he's versatile in a similar way to Sandler, Will Ferrell is fairly one note.
Sandler's handful of "serious" roles are definitely better than Ferrell's. Carrey is probably better than both during that run of Truman Show-Man on the Moon-Eternal Sunshine, but then he became a weird recluse.
My only gripe is killing off Julie Bowen. Her presence is in the film, yes, but it’s weird seeing her promote the film on the talk show circuit when she gets killed five minutes in.
Sandy Wexler is definitely a major step up from something like The Ridiculous 6. And since then, a lot of the Netflix-Sandler stuff has been totally serviceable and pleasant (albeit forgettable) comedies like The Week Of and Murder Mystery. Spaceman is, at the very least, a really interesting swing and a miss. And of course the stand-up stuff is great. As an actual actor, he's probably neck and neck with Carrey when he wants to be serious. Ferrell isn't really in that conversation imo, but if you're talking about comedy runs, Ferrell probably beats out both of them in terms of quality and consistency (even if he's my least favorite of the bunch).
