Darling is one of my favorite songs on the album. If I had to cut anything it would be The Lighthouse.
do we have to put IMO after every post again? I just enjoy listening to the album more if I disable Darling. Also artists aren't infallible. also this post is extra hilarious seeing that DONDA dropped this week and it'd be def better if a few (most?) tracks weren't on there lol
I admit that I am mildly obsessed with album sequencing. I really wish more artists would go in depth on why they chose the sequencing they did.
perhaps i fired from the hip a bit too quick. it’s something that irks me with art a lot. like people saying martin scorsese should have made the irishman shorter and needs an editor. like, i don’t need to read that dork shit. but it’s fine.
I mean obviously if people are throwing out generalized statements, which to be fair we all are -- even my post reads as one -- implying they know better than the artist, that sucks. but ultimately we are just talking about things we do or do not enjoy. sequencing, length, pacing are all aspects that are worth talking about and criticising, especially if it's easily fixed for your own personal enjoyment as with an album. I am sure there's plenty of intent in the sequencing of this album, heck, if I insisted on having Darling on here (as I know Halsey does as the song is important to them), I wouldn't know where else to put it. I'd even argue it's in the perfect place. I just prefer the album without it and I think that's as fair a statement as any.
If we're gonna talk sequencing, I don't like how The Tradition and Bells in Santa Fe are the first two tracks. Love both songs, but it just feels weird kicking the album off with two softer songs, considering the rest of the album is mostly high energy. I think I would've swapped Easier and Bells in the sequencing, but what the hell do I know lol
I’m a big proponent of saving the slow songs until at least track 4 or 5, but I think it works here because it has to establish the mood of the album and how this is going to have a different sound than previous Halsey albums. Then “Easier Than Lying” comes in and whips ass.
My one note about "Darling" is the melody for the chorus reminds me a lot of Kacey Musgraves' "Misterable." Doesn't detract from the song though.
Halfway through the Halsey/Trent/Atticus conversation. LOVE that Trent threw shade at Kanye, saying something like "we knew the music would speak for itself, we didnt need to light ourselves on fire in order to get people to pay attention." Boom roasted.
That conversation is so interesting, I put it on in the background and wanted to do something else while it was playing but I am just entirely glued to it.
I like that the first two tracks here essentially serve as a cumulative build to Easier Than Lying personally
just because the first two tracks are a little more sparse doesnt mean they dont pack a huge punch, especially the tradition. the "take what you want, take what you need..." bit is massive and delivered with such conviction its elevated beyond just a normal 'album intro' type track.
intense haha but yes, you're obviously right when it comes to the instrumentation, but it still feels like so much, emotionally.
well thats my entire point in my other post haha i mean i know i singled out the tradition but bells is the same way, the writing elevates it beyond what you could reasonably call a sparse song because of its power
My first listen I didn’t actually realize they were two different tracks until I was 3/4 of the way through Bells. A great opening.
I don't know why but I'm not really connecting with this album. I can't really tell why, but something about it isn't really working for me, it constantly is falling into background music for me
