Even a layer deeper, I feel like pure pop has taken over the more indie spheres at this point, let alone in the mainstream. It feels like how the late 00s must have been for most emo/pop punk, still doing well enough, but not quite the peak of the era anymore.
Wikipedia tends to pull from major publications and if you click each hyperlink in this Wiki article you can see the MetaCritic score/average: Haim discography - Wikipedia Days Are Gone = 79/100 Something to Tell You = 69/100 Women In Music Pt III = 89/100 I Quit = 80/100 So, in general, the "critics consensus" is that Something To Tell You ranks last. My personal ranking of the 4 LPs would be: Women In Music Pt. III Days Are Gone I Quit Something To Tell You
I don’t know the whole PB catalogue, so I can’t really speak to it (though I have my assumptions). I do like Soccer Mommy well enough (love like 1/3 of her output) and have heard all of her work. She is not making songs like Relationships and Spinning though. Those straight up sound like classic Janet Jackson songs. HAIM has more range. I guess what I’m trying to say is this argument sells HAIM way short.
I still need to give this a full spin. I listened to women in music like a week before this dropped and realized how uneven it is. Some real stinkers on there.
The first 3 are pretty even for me, I’m the biggest STTY defender around, and this is a little below them all for sure.
Women in Music has a few too many songs but overall that album is damn good. Still think it would have been massive had the timing been not the very beginning of COVID. Actually part of what made me sure I actually think this album is a step down is that like 3 days ago Gasoline came on when I was at the store and that song just rules on every level, even the best ones here aren't as inspired as that. And that's kinda the thing for me after a few listens - it's not burnout on this genre for me, I just don't think these songs are overall that memorable.
I don't get the comparisons... at all? This reminds me more of 90s stuff like Luscious Jackson and I echo the R&B inspiration here and there. Overall it's also looser, jammier and less polished than their previous albums as well. Don't see how it sits in the same lane as the other artists mentioned above.
I think I can see the line to most of this record being close to Fleetwood Mac territory. That’s a bit of a cop out to justify both throwback pop and modern indie comparisons.
yeah I like DAG and WIM more than this but its def a step down. I think its still way better than STTY.
I went straight to Janet Jackson because it’s a more recognisable comparison to most here, but a more current release the two songs I mentioned and some other (vocal) fragments on this album remind me of is last years Fabiana Palladino album
My quick take on this album after just two listens is that (as with so many albums these days) it doesn't need to be 15 tracks, if 4-5 were cut out, or just bonus tracks, it could easily be their best album. Maybe it's controversial but I don't like the George Michael sample on the opener, I don't really feel like it sounds good with the track, I would cut that one as well as 2-3 from the last quarter of the album. Also controversial, I don't dislike The Farm.
Yeah this is just kinda there. Really started to lose track of what song was what about half way through.
GlastonGlastonbury 2025 sets can be downloaded from the following link. Took me forever to find these. I'll be cross-posting this in every thread with an artist that had a set at this year's festival. Enjoy everyone! I just looked at tickets for the Chicago show and there are still plenty of tickets available. I think a lot of the shows are selling just okay. They just cancelled the Phoenix show. Hopefully this means I can grab a cheap ticket the week of the show!
Which is honestly a bummer, but I also get it. This album isn't full of immediate tracks, but SO many are rewarding on third or fourth listen. Like, have you heard "Million Years"??? That one is unreal, but I didn't realize til maybe the third time I heard it, with good speakers. The album is also long, and yes a bit uneven, but the good is really special
