I like the songs individually but I am not sure if I like the sequencing, but the songs themselves are good (so far, I am a little over halfway through the album)
Women in Music Pt III is one of my favorite albums of the decade so far, but this.... this did almost nothing for me. I do like "Lucky stars" and the ending bit of "All over me".
got about halfway through this this morning and enjoyed what i heard. need to sit down and spin it in full, perhaps tomorrow.
I know I talked shit and I stand by it but this is still a very nice listen, especially in the evening. Lucky Stars is so good.
Love the 90s, Luscious Jackson vibe throughout but it lost me at some point in the second half. Going to second the sequencing issue, but I'll revisit it many more times before making a final judgement on that front.
I had unrealistically high expectations before clicking play on that, so it didn't meet them, but it's still a good cover
Many are saying my playlist edit is infuriating, the devil’s work even. But I say it’s perfect. Relationships Cry All Over Me Down To Be Wrong Take Me Back Everybody’s Trying To Figure Me Out Lucky Stars Million Years Spinning Blood On The Street Now It’s Time Gone Love You Right (bonus track) Feel My Pain (bonus track) The Farm (bonus track)
This debuted at #22 with 19k equivalent albums This performed way worse than I was anticipating. Gotta be their first album that didn't crack the Top 10, right?
It might be, yes…Looks like it went #2 on the “pure albums” chart, but overall a disappointment, commercially for their label. This site has the exact sales figures that Billboard doesn’t seem to show for each individual release (hid behind a paywall, I believe): Chart: Hits Top 50 (2025-06-27)
I gave this another full listen just now and there’s so much boring filler on this imo. I think this’ll be my least favorite album of theirs. All the singles are top tier though. I’ve streamed the hell out of All Over Me, Down to be Wrong and ETTFMO.
I don’t think this is bad* but it just feels so inconsequential to me compared to WiMp3. That was a level up/culmination of what the first two records were building toward whereas this feels mostly like a nice sounding collection of decent songs. There are some real moments of inspiration (the way they’re in perfect sync at the end of All Over Me, Lucky Stars in general), but so much of this is just pleasant. *Take Me Back is probably my least favorite song they’ve ever done. Pure cringe lyrics.
Yeah, it’s not a great album, which means they still don’t have one imo. I feel like they’re really good at doing singles but not so good crafting records.
The backlash to this album has me thinking about how much the sound of the moment affects how people perceive a record. I know the sound doesn't map to the Boygenius/bedroom pop/indie folk era neatly, but it feels like this album being mostly solid, but not super well-received, is a sign that the era has passed.
I'd argue Women In Music Pt. III was their strongest to date, but on some days I could make the same argument for the debut too.
That's also a great point...why reach for I Quit when Soccer Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers/Boygenius, and a handful of other indie female-fronted bands are arguably doing the same type of music...better?
I could be way off but while this is probably their most poorly received record so far, I feel like similar complaints have more or less been present for each release. At least personally speaking, every time there’s a HAIM rollout I find myself hoping the new one will be consistently good.
