Yep. My dad’s a minister so it was church at least once a week for my entire childhood to early teenage years and I had everyone breathing down my neck constantly to be a good preacher’s kid. It was awful for my anxiety.

No, I have incredibly negative thoughts about almost every single aspect of it now and get really upset when criticism of the church gets labeled as ignorance since my disdain for it comes from knowing too much, not too little.

I have to hide that from my dad though because it would be terrible for our relationship if he knew, so that’s the only stressful aspect at this point.

 

I let my mom think that I believe in God, mostly just to give her some peace of mind. She worries about me so much as is I figured it’s one less thing.

that said I’m with @EASheartsVinyl i hate pretty much every aspect of modern American Christianity and specifically the culture of churches

 

Yeah, that sucks. While not in anything close to your situation, my father did take us all to church while growing up (I learned only a few years ago that my mom doesn't really have faith, but just went along--she stopped once my dad didn't force his two children anymore) and being negative about it can get him annoyed with you.

He actually takes us to midnight mass on Christmas eve still. I do not dress up though. My parents (and sister to a lesser extent just to be polite) dress up and I look like I just fell out of bed.

 

I told myself that my mom was hella judgmental and if I told her the truth she’d disown me. But I eventually said fuck it and told her I’m an atheist and that I think the Bible is a fairytale and she told me she loves me no matter what and our relationship has been better than it ever was when I was pretending. I get that I might be kinda lucky in that regard. But it’s pretty crazy considering how hardcore religious she is

My father retired a few years back which was great for me because I never had to hear about anything church related anymore, but when he moved he started working at one again and it’s been rough. Every time he tells me he can’t come into town because of a session meeting or something I get flashbacks. He’s making good money too so I can’t tell him how hard it is. He does know that I don’t go to church at all but I think he blames it on laziness and anger at the culture and not that I’ve gone full atheist on him.

I find that I’m very content having one foot planted firmly in the mass appeal/Disneyfied films and one foot in the more obscure/artsy world of cinema. Both sides of the coin have always appealed to me
