Yeah any monopoly is hugely problematic, these changes are just horrific in their own way. Independent theaters are already struggling enough as it is, especially with Disney taking away all the Fox movies.

the competition in the streaming market is far from good but it is getting better and its better than competition between theater companies

bottom line: Im not personally going to financially support the pay for it once at theaters and then again later after home release scheme anymore because I feel it is more anti consumer than it needs to be

The only movies I ever pay for twice are physical purchases that I want to own forever. Not sure how that’s a scheme but maybe I’m not understanding what you mean.

unfortunately most cant afford to care

and if the conversation of dieing markets has to turn into a conversation about loss of jobs, correct me if Im wrong, I dont think theres any dwindling availibility of minimum wage jobs. the problem is obviously that minimum wage is not living wage.

Pretty sure @iCarly Rae Jepsen was joking with that one.

As far as money goes though, people who can’t afford first run movies certainly aren’t better served by first run prices without any of the benefits a theater gets you. Easier access to films is always going to be one of the best parts of streaming services until they’re all the only viable content creators and suddenly the interesting choices dry up.

    interesting choices dry up?

On that front, I dont see how distribution through apps is any inherently worse than through their old brick and mortar counterparts.

Disney and Netflix and other services acquiring everything is what I’m talking about. Buying out theaters or production companies to control what content people consume won’t lead to more challenging films being made or seen.

oh yeah I agree with that

I just think its silly to say that theaters broadly help that situation any at all

if independent theaters help, that pot is small, and consequently the indie scene is always proportionately small

Yeah I guess I just mean that independent theaters as a whole and the freedom for bigger theaters to host independent films IS really important, and the landscape changing where that can’t exist at all is super frightening to me. Like there’s one big theater near me that has both The Irishman and Parasite this week, and that kind of access is something I can easily see this changing for the worse.

    thats a good point

fwiw I think those distributors of smaller films, be it the studios or whoever else it is, 100% can and should get that content streaming

maybe there are similar and greater exposure opportunities out there to what you described

Oh yeah, some of them so far have done that and it’s been good. But if there aren’t theaters at all I’m terrified about a lot of that content never getting made in the first place. Like right now Netflix has been throwing tons of money around, but what if they start passing as well? There’s so much room for things to go wrong in a bunch of directions.
