I think this might be the best thing Bob has put out in a long time. This is sticking with me in a way that none of the post-reunion albums did. The hooks are massive and the are riffs rockin'.
it's so worth it. also, each band member has ~2 songs (which are all pretty great) & help break up the Bob stuff.
I've been listening to this album and the follow-up How Do You Spell Heaven a lot in this month I think they're the best records Pollard's done since maybe Isolation Drills August By Cake is a particularly strong double LP where GBV really sound like a BAND rather than Pollard and a bunch of hired guns I think it helps that he let the other dudes write/sing a few songs on the LP
i want to listen to this still but it's extremely daunting to listen to all their material beyond the big names this probably tops the list though given the praise i've heard some people give it
it's p gr8 imo It took me a few days to listen to the whole thing ha but that's mostly cuz I intermittently put it on at work now I listen to it straight through
it stresses me out to not listen to things straight through for a first listen haha. couldn't tell you why the size of their discography also stresses me out but i'll definitely give this one a listen this week. have you ever seen them live btw? i always wonder how a setlist of theirs would work given that they have to play like double what most bands would play
GBV is one of those bands I've always heard about but have never listened to... 100 albums!?! Lol What are the must-hear songs in their back catalogue?
hahaha that's fair I'm usually the same but for whatever reason I didn't mind with this one, maybe because I didn't expect it to be so great? I've never seen them live! I've heard they play upwards of 50 songs every show though lol From what I can tell they're always pretty raucous drunken affairs and I think they cover "Baba O'Riley" every show too
Alien Lanes was my entry point to them and still probably my favorite in terms of one off songs from that one I'd go with "Game of Pricks," "Motor Away," and "A Good Flying Bird"
Listen to Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes to see if you're interested if you only want songs, i'd say echoes myron, tractor rape chain, i am a scientist, game of pricks, and a salty salute. a little harder to boil down alien lanes bc most of the songs flow into each other
holy shit 50 songs...i assume they must play the same setlist every night? otherwise that's incredible
I'm combing through setlist.fm at the sets from this most recent tour and it looks like they change it up a decent amount each night lol
omg they're doing too much...though im sure some songs must be muscle memory at this point, too. i would love to see this band live but i would recognize maaaaybe a third of the songs lol. for my money i really don't think there's many people out there in indie rock who have a better grasp of pop and songwriting in general than pollard
I do love the image of a 60-year-old former school teacher out there doing all of these songs he's supposed to be releasing a country album this year? could be entertaining lol
