I feel like we do this every couple months but American Idiot Nimrod 21st Century Breakdown Insomniac Dookie Warning Kerplunk Revolution Radio 39/Smooth Trilogy (though my one album version would be a bit higher) FOAM
Dookie American Idiot Nimrod Warning Insomniac Kerplunk! Revolution Radio 1,039/Smoothed Slappy Hours Trilogy 21CB FOAM Over time, I've grown to appreciate the simpler, pop-punk songs on the Trilogy. It doesn't excuse the duds. But I've enjoyed "X-Kid," "Stay the Night," and "Baby Eyes" far more than anything on 21CB which just kinda feels like a try-hard version of American Idiot.
Theres a few misses sure but it's not a straight forward punk album or a big bloated anthem like idiot/21st. I like that it felt like a mix of their career in a way. Bang bang/rev radio as solid fast punk green day, Youngblood being a fun pop punk song, and then having somewhere now/forever now as their anthems. Still breathing also acting like a very rare, somewhat "taking back Sunday" sounding song to make or different. It has something for everyone and starts really strong and ends strong.
American Idiot Dookie Warning Nimrod 21st Century Revolution Radio Insomniac Tre Kerplunk 39/Smooth FOAM Uno Dos The trilogy albums are all pretty distinct for me, so it makes more sense to rank them separately. Genuinely really like Tre. The other two, not so much.
American Idiot Warning Dookie Nimrod 21CB Insomniac Rev Radio Kerplunk The rest are not worth ranking for me but FOAM is the bottom of that tier lol
Dookie aside, I'm a casual Green Day fan at best. American Idiot seems to have hit everyone other than me.
My local alt station is playing Roshambo right now and I was like... That sounds like Billie Joe, wtf is this?!
I'm dumb so I tried to give FOAM a second chance. Nope lol. I hate his vocals on so much of this on top of everything else bad. Sugar Youth is the only one I think is tolerable and that's cause it kind of reminds me of The Network
father of all, fire ready aim, meet you on the roof, stab you in the heart, and sugar youth all rule.
I tried the trilogy today. Maybe two or three songs that are alright. The demos are better and still almost all suck. Then I went back to the good albums. So much more fun thinking about and listening to those.
Mother Mary by Foxboro Hot Tubs is an absolutely amazing song, one of the best melodies BJ has ever written. I really love Roshambo by the Network too. All of their side projects fucking rule actually and I wish they were more willing to bring that experimentation into the main band
My ranking is American Idiot Warning Nimrod 21CBD Dookie Kerplunk Rev Rad Insomniac Trilogy FOAM 39/Smooth They're my favorite band so I'm allowed to have a weird ranking lol. I don't dislike any of their albums, I actually still really like the trilogy and have a lot of nostalgia for it since I was in high school when it came out. I love when they go pure power pop and those albums have that in spades (still quite a few misses though)
tier 1: AI, nimrod, warning tier 2: insomniac, dookie, 21CB, uno, superhits tracks, simpsons theme tier 3: kerplunk, 1039, radio tier 4: everything else.
I would also add At the Library, Disappearing Boy, Paper Lanterns, 409 in your Coffeemaker, and Only of You as absolute bangers.
